Allegiance - Why bother? (What is in it for me other than cookies)

For those who espouse the merits of immersion, I agree with the spirit of what you say. I also agree that the game should not become a narrow grind for credits.

However, look at it from the perspective of a new player who is scraping together enough to properly outfit a Cobra.

Such people are looking at the fact that a Python costs 55 mil and then they learn that they should not even consider getting one without bringing 150+ to the table if they expect to be able to outfit it even moderately well.

Anacondas are a pipe dream for such people and they are reading in these forums of people who keep two and a small fleet of assorted craft to do with as their fancy strikes.

Given this, it should not be any wonder that many players will seek to maximize their earning potential and thus question the particular need to align themselves with a faction by completing missions that do not return an immediate monetary reward.

Count me among those relatively new to the game. I have a maxed out Vulture and 40 mil credits to my name. I am still in the building stage. I’ve completed almost zero missions that do not advance my desire to explore more of what the game has to offer. To me that means stacking up a wad of cash. Factions be damned. :D

There is nothing wrong with wanting to move up the ladder & improve your own situation before pledging allegiance to some faction or other. Powerplay will still be there, ready & waiting whenever you decide to participate (or not).

Apos,

I DO own a totally tricked out Vulture that can seriously kick ass. And I know how to massage the throttle and stick enough to toast any fool careless enough to challenge me. :p

thats another reason why you should sign up, fools might challenge you more :)
in the current game there is very little reason for them to do so, unless you got a bounty on your head or you are in a hauler whit valuable cargo (that is not playing in solo!) or they simply want to grief you (the most likely scenario in the current game)

Powerplay brings meaning to PVP and a reason to fight :)

I've always approached the game from the perspective that grinding now for the sake of some nebulous future enjoyment is counterproductive.

Instead, I find ways to have fun that also earn a few credits. And at this point, having started in March and now owning a well-kitted Python, I'm very glad of having taken that approach - because there is no super-special endgame gear that makes the game fundamentally more enjoyable. My Python is great to fly, but it's probably less fun in combat than a Vulture.

If Powerplay gives people more things to do rather than just grinding to the next ship, that'll be great.

I do hope that Cobblars (the OP) is getting out of this thread what I am.

I do appreciate the input and perspective from all of you.

For this player, it is time to explore more of what the game has to offer. After about 6 week's play, I have a firm grasp of the dynamics and mechanics of the game. Questions remain, but I do not consider myself a total noob any longer.

Careful what you wish for. I see myself becoming a serious scourge that many will devote time to riding the galaxy of.

The question remains as to which of you become friend or foe. :p

Well I certainly hope so. Or rather I hope it will mean people confine themselves to fighting other power aligned players. What I suspect will happen however is even more indiscriminate ganking with a "we're doing it for power X" figleaf, when what they really mean is "we're doing it because we like to shoot people".

Yes I am mate. It had made me think more seriously about picking a faction and supporting them, rather than just merely trading.

The Alliance is pulling me at the moment, we shall see. :)
