Ships Alliance Challenger, Alliance Chieftan, Alliance Crusader... what's the difference?

I hope you can forgive my ignorance but, are those ships really different from each other? In game description say both Challenger and Crusader derive from the Chieftan and certainly the three look almost the same. The three are medium ships. The three are in the "mid-price" range of 15 mill to 30 mill, according to Coriolis, the manuabravlity between the 3 do not differ for more than 20 points, they have the same "hardness" raiting of 65, same mass-lock factor, same raitings for core modules, similar speed, similar cargo and passenger capacity, the three are supposed to be good against thargoid enemies...

So, please, someone tell me, what is the main difference between the three ships and what makes them better at which roles?

Challenger is good.
Chieftain is good-ish.
That is all.
Correct answer, or to borrow from a certain starfleet CMDR... there are TWO ships :D

(Crusader is crap)

Even with the fighter bay? That's one of the few things where I see a remarkable difference.

A fighter is nice, but compared to the Chieftain/Challenger the Crusader sacrifices more than the fighter could potentially make up for.

If you are looking for a medium ship with a fighter bay, the Krait MK2 crushes the Crusader in every regard.
