Ships Alliance Chieftain Build Help

Hi guys,

I'm outfitting my chief as following and wonder if these are optimal:

I'm currently doing 70% exploration/mission/gatherinf mats and 30% res/cz combat. Also might need to handle situation when being pvp.

Looks ok as an all-rounder. Obviously you can push up the module effectiveness with more engineering, but all in good time. I'd probably ditch the AFMU (you'll rarely use one exploring let along if you're in the bubble) and install a collector controller to scoop them materials quicker.

Trouble with all-rounders is that it won't do anything particularly well. This is why most CMDRs tend to have task-specific ships.

In a RES you should be fine, however a CZ is a different matter - you're fighting against engineered combat ships not dodgy pirates. In a PVP situation, you'll likely get chewed up with those shield and armour resistances. That's no reason not to give both CZs/PVP a go, but very much plan on a retreat or rebuy screen. For sustained combat, I'd suggest switch out missiles for multicannons and drop the scoop, cargo rack and dune buggy for hull/module reinforcements. Swap them all back if you're not planning combat.

Seeker missiles are fun and thats all the reason I need to use them on run-about builds, but they are not very effective in sustained combat like CZs and PVP. They have a long lock-on time, limited ammo and are rendered mostly worthless if the target has a point defence.

Your build is fine really and if it makes you smile, then its great! Fly dirty CMDR!

Alright, will swap the optionals before poking around in CZs again. Already had a taste of it yesterday but managed to took out a FAS and Vulture before retreating. As for now, I think i'm going back to exploration/mission running to collect materials for engineering while enjoying the flight with my chief. It does put a smile on my face when flying it!

Good point about the missiles, i was using it as some sort of deterrent, like, launch some missiles during FA off -> turn around -> lock and launch -> thrusters around again, sort of these. I'm still thinking what else can i do with those small hardpoints while coping with the power requirement.

Here's a build I use, large beams for small to medium targets add in the cannons for large hulls once the shields are down (swap for MC's if you like), Coriolis short link seems to be on holiday sry ;)

Mine has 2 x large PAs and the rest railguns. Runs quite hot and the PP needs to be fairly heavily engineered to output enough juice but it's great fun. Toying with replacing the medium rail with a medium beam laser with Thermal Vent - 2 reasons, firstly to bleed off heat and second is the last couple of times out in a CZ i've tagged a target and it drop to 0% hull but not explode - i assume a rounding error and it has somewhere between 0-0.49% hull. Much easier to tag that last blip of damage with a beam laser rather than lining up a PA or rail shot.

Thrusters are G4 dirty

Mine is set up purely as combat and fairly heavily engineered, it does have a scoop as the fuel tank is tiny and jump range fairly rubbish so you can't get far on a single tank

Thanks guys, I've settled down with this build for now with current unlocked engineering at my disposal. Gonna give this chief a spin soon.

I’d drop the docking computer and/or supercruise assist and get a collector limpet controller in there. You’re obviously going to be fighting NPCs so a collector controller will help snagging those juicy mats.

The Chieftain is easy to fly so docking is easy. I only put supercruise assists on dedicated exploration builds

Ahh i see your point about the limpet! Totally didn't think of putting it except in my mining ship.

Yeah, i dropped the docking computer and getting used to manual docking. I had nightmares trying to manual dock, especially looking for the entrance at Coriolis type station.

Chieftain is really a blast to fly! I do notice that I'm fighting more effective with PA/Frag, compared to laser+multicannon.

Hi guys,

As a former ganker that primarily uses Chieftains, I would crush that build.

I would highly suggest reactive armor and more hull reinforcements

I understand these are pve builds but here's what you're up against if someone tries to gank you.
This is my current PvP build and what I used to gank with.

BTW, why aren't the shortened links working?

Nice, i see your point. I'm just gonna escape in the event of being gank since my engineering levels are low and yet to fully unlock. Works for me so far lol.

Looks a beast of a build but just curious, the small turret pulse laser, what’s the thinking behind that? I’m currently running 2 large PAs and the rest rails but toying with replacing the medium with a beam with thermal vent

I don’t do PVP so just interested in your reasons as you know much more about it than me

I noticed that turret has scramble spectrum effects. Prolly to cause random subsystem malfunction? Just a thought.

Constant DPS keeps bi weave shields from recharging and the scramble spectrum has a chance of temporarily knocking out the power plant as well as other modules.

What’s odd about it? Cytos for shields. APAs for hull. Short range beam to dump heat. Corrosive MC for a little extra damage to hulls and to help the beam out against small fry ships. Yours has better absolute shields, but mine resist damage better. Not everything has to be the meta.
