From lowest to highest with federal/imperial rank for comparison :
Recruit <-> Outsider <-> Conscript
Cadet <-> Serf <-> Pilot
Midshipman <-> Master <->Flying Officer
Petty Officer <-> Squire <-> Flight Lieutenant
Chief Petty Officer <-> Knight <-> Squadron Leader
Warrant Officer <-> Lord <-> Wing Commander (hope there is not copyrights problems there, plus a nice hat tip)
Ensign <-> Baron <-> Group Captain
Lieutenant <-> Viscount <-> Commodore
Lieutenant Commander <-> Count <-> Chief Marshal

Not sure about conscript, it has a certain connotation that I don't think fits the Alliance. I'd change Space Marshal to Star Marshal. Group Captain sounds basic but would probably be OK.

Like the idea, how about "volunteer" to replace "conscript".

Fed "kind of" has military ranks based upon the old Earth U.S. Navy, Empire has titles.

How about going straight-up military rank with Alliance?

Private -> Private First Class -> Specialist -> Sergeant -> Staff Sergeant -> Sergeant First Class -> 1st Sergeant -> Sergeant Major -> 2nd Lieutenant -> 1st Lieutenant -> Captain -> Major -> Lieutenant Colonel -> Colonel -> Brigadier General -> Major General -> Lieutenant General -> General

Upon reaching Major General rank one must be hailed in-game with the following:

The Alliance strikes me as similar militarily to the colonial united states. I would mix in some influences from that.

Precisely! this I like. I've actually thought of starting an Alliance combat wing called "Minutemen" so I'm good with it.
