This would especially apply for the older/original ships now that newer ones are coming out that are straight up superior.
-No engineering mats needed. This was the worst decision ever made (engineering requiring mats). Just have this cost credits.
-Allow us to spend credits to bring older ships and some of the less used ships up to spec within reason (so a Sidewinder is not going to get 6 huge weapons or 500 tons cargo capacity). Ideas:
--Increased speed and/or agility.
--Increased base jump range.
--Improved SCO performance (to compete with newer SCO ships).
--Increased heat efficiency.
--Increase modules (either more # or make slightly larger in size).
--Increase base shield capacity
--Possibly add weapon hardpoints or slightly increase hardpoint size.
--Allow for better placement of weapons hardpoints (better convergence) or introduce micro gimbaling for fixed hardpoints so they have good convergence (think the terrible convergence on the Clipper).
--Increased turret speed/accuracy.
--Increase base sensor performance.
--Add utility hardpoints.
--Increase power efficiency (so power plant and distributor are stronger)
---Could go on and on.
The idea would be that these improvements are to the base of the ship itself (not the modules/weapons/etc...) so they would stack on top of modules/module engineering. I don't like the idea of ships going obsolete and it makes sense that you could go all Millenium Falcon and make something that looks like an old clunker an awesome ship.
Maybe this can only be done with the older/original ships and possible improvements would be more significant for lesser powered ships (so for example you could upgrade a Sidewinder or Adder quite a bit more than a Krait).
