Allow Galactic Map as it's own application

It would be great if I could have the galactic map open on a second monitor or tablet, and allow me to be logged into both the game and the map.

This way I could stay in the game flying my ship and still have access to that beauty FD created, selecting targets and such.

Same for system maps.

Shame I have to exit the game to look at the maps.

Put them outside the game proper and let me move them around in their own window as I want.

Only connection would be target destinations passed to my game client (or from the nav panel back to the Galactic Map app).

That is not a bad idea. It is a very good idea.
I do not have a second monitor, but I would seriously consider having one for this.

I would want to keep full functionality in connection with the game of course.
It would be cool if the system map would automatically update with every jump I make.

I agree, the idea would be a fully functioning game and the same map functionality we have today. It would require data to be passed in a bit more complex way so it might add a bit of lag when copying a route from the mapping application to the game client.

Taking this concept one step further, FD could have several applets that we could keep open to be more "in the game" when travelling, which takes a lot of time in this game.

Imagine scoping out the Orrey view in a window while still being able to fly or at least look out the cockpit of your ship and quickly glance back and forth.

Reading the GalNet news in another window? Sure, why not. I read internet news and print media while I play as it is. Why not pretend I can do that in the cockpit as well?

Possibly this could make things a lot more complex, what do I know? But removing all the mapping code from the core game would at least make that build a bit lighter, and with a hoped-for Orrey view with many functions, just the more so. And a co-pilot could plot routes while the pilot flies if the focus could be split between Keyboard/mouse and a Hotas. But even if the focus had to be on one or the other window, at least we could watch where we are flying while perusing the galaxy map.

I don't know outside of maps and news if anything else would be appropriate, and not immersion breaking of the pilot role, but possibly.

Just a suggestion. If you make this, make an Android app, and shamelessly put a price tag on it :D I want you guys to make money, because then my favorite game gets better!
