(Almost) Free animals on the game's birthday

Maybe I'm out of the loop but I don't actually get why the anniversary matters? I didn't realise it was supposed to be a special day, so a tweet seems sufficient to me. I wouldn't expect anything more than that from a film, or a book, or frankly any other video game. Like, I love Pokemon but I truly couldn't tell you a launch date for literally any of the games. Is there something I'm missing here?

Oh, I see! Thanks for letting me know. Never played Planet Coaster so I didn't know this used to be a thing. I can see why some people might be disappointed by its absence, then.
The problem was that people got hyped because PC got a big update and though PZ would as well although personally I think PC only got a big update because the update schedule and what they wanted to put into the game coincided with the anniversary rather than the team thought 'the anniversary is coming up... we should build them a big updated'. There were plenty of big updates that came along at other points in the year with much requested features. I hope eventually we will get a scenario editor for PZ but I think it will only happen as an anniversary update if that makes the most sense in their plans. For example, if they think aviaries or brachiation is more important for the coding team then they will tackle that first and that makes more sense alongside a DLC. Elite Dangerous didn't get an anniversary update, I don't think PC got one every year and it certainly wasn't always exactly on the anniversary.

My personal opinion is that people had some unrealistic expectations but I get that they were disappointed. We did get diving a month afterwards though and the last update was a big one without it being amy kind of anniversary so personally I am not bothered about the date so much as that they are continuing to work on the fundamental mechanics of the game (not just adding a new DLC with some extra animals). I'd rather they introduced those new mechanics when they are as ready as they can be rather than to meet a pre-defined schedule of community hype.

I also understand calls for more communication from Frontier and roadmaps etc. but experience tells me Frontier will not take that approach and I understand why. It doesn't particularly bother me because I quite like to be surprised and experience from PC suggests they tend to be really up front about stuff they are definitely not planning to do. So for example, I am very optimistic that at some point they will introduce birds and aviaries etc. because there are so many requests for it - if they weren't going to do it they would do what they did in PC with waterpark / water slides and say 'we have no plans to include this in PC'.
