Almost played Elite Dangerous - nearly inspired by a gunship

It occured to me that i was ranked ensign with the feds and could buy a gunship if i want.
I have never had a ship with a fighter and thought it might be fun.
Went to coriolis to check out the cr to max it out, and was suddenly filled with disgust at the thought of having to troll through endless HGE's and whatever hoops to engineer it.
Decided to watch a movie.

Maybe ill make it tomorrow.

Any reason we get a dairy of your life?

Do you seek our validation?

No, i think maybe im looking for encouragement or maybe a suggestion, but i dont think there is any cure for the level of disgust i feel for the RNGineers and there is no ED without them and ED seems the closest thing to a somewhat complete space sim out there right now.
But if you are offering validation i will take it, do i still get it if im over two hours?

Have you done any exploring? Seen a black hole or planetary nebula in game?

Have you tried doing passenger sight seeing missions? Those are actually pretty fun?

Have you tried mining? I personally find that to be fun as well.

I actually quite enjoyed a recent evening spent HGE-farming. It was in Bunda, and before I started I loaded up with sufficient data delivery missions to ensure that I had several hired killers sent after me. This meant that every now and then I had to break off scooping proto alloys to kill the ship that was trying to kill me, which in turn produced more stuff to scoop. And the new limits on materials mean that I am rediscovering USSs, which I had been ignoring for some time. So not just HGEs, but distress calls of various sorts. It gets quite interesting when you are in a threat 4 distress call USS and then the hired killer jumps in too...

If you are prepared to let your imagination fill in the story, USSs can provide a bit of material. Such as the time a wedding barge left a USS just before I jumped into it. What was it doing there, I thought, then jumped in to find a single occupied escape pod. I guess that's what happened to the guy who said he didn't think he could go through with it.

And OP - having an NPC-piloted SLF gives you the opportunity to develop more varied and enjoyable combat tactics, especially when they git gud themselves.

Eh.. I'm in the same boat as the OP.

I was going to invest in a new ship build, either a Chieftain or a Gunship. Planned it out, realized I needed materials and said forget it.

The Engineering grind really is a huge deterent unless it's something you just 'must have.' I would need to find Proto Heat Radiators.. and f*&k that! since 3.0 they're almost impossible to find even if you know exactly what to look for.

HGE farming is the single worst aspect of this game hands down.

You are a Confident capable individual, who can make their own choices of what they find enjoyable or not.

I spent 4 hours grinding to unlock a module that fdev removed before I could unlock it because no one thought "hey, if we are going to double fuel usage, we need to also double the fuel cap or else people won't be able to make full range jumps."

I don't even know why I thought a 125% increase in fuel usage for 10ly of jump range was even worth it in the first place, I guess I really liked the idea even though fdev managed to masterfully botch the execution of.

Describes the whole game really, a great concept whose greatness ends right there at the conceptual. The rest is mediocre if we're being generous.

Edit: oh and before some wonk tells me to "just play something else if you don't like it" I am, it's called complaining on the forums, and its pretty fun.

Oddly enough, it was my first FGS that caused me to go to Sag A... in a Sidey.

I can't recall the exact sequence of events but I was getting so hacked-off with modding weapons and modules that, upon finding myself in Deciat, I just bought a Sidey, went and did a one-roll G5 on the FSD and then went walkabout.

Hence why that Sidey ended-up being named the "Reggie Perrin".

Well may you could just not engineer it. Or take modules off your other ships to try it out. It's not like you will be flying them at the same time.

I don't have disgust, but similarly in effect I have ED laziness or fatigue (probably in a big part because I commit to powerplay maintenance and some bgs effort which takes up much of the "pilot energy" weekly) where often sometimes I put off doing some of the ED "chores" such as getting another ship engineered or missing most CG's. Or I still haven't done the guardians to get the materials needed for the newer modules. Nor traveled as far to Colonia or SagA after all this time.

@ OP, you're not wrong, RNGineering has pretty much ruined what was a fun flying a spaceship game (I came back after a four month sabbatical) and it was fun for a couple of weeks or so in my courier but I stupidly bought a Chieftan, looked at the stupid C&P (laughingly called an overhaul), the engineering grind - going from one to five on EACH module, plus finding HGEs that due to recurring bugs you couldn't be sure were even in the game (tho Fdev will never explicitly tell players), or the poor Thargoid mystery played thru' Youtube clips and BGS ticks, and over abundance of Wing missions (+ getting the best payment options) on the job boards.

If you like pewpew, the game is most assuredly aimed at you, eternal waves of enemies at hazres sites, guessing at skimmers legality so you can accrue a bounty (even tho the last red box was an illegal drop site) then being harassed by police of a faction you're allied with because IF THEN AND OR is teh hard, fighting only multicrew implementation...

Nice galaxy, shame about the <lack of> gameplay!

I can definitely encourage you not to post about this in the forums like it's a twitter update feed... :)

FYI you can play without engineers, your assertion that there is no ED without them is incorrect. I was engineerless on my secondary account (no horizons) for over 18 months. Also fighters cannot be engineered so if you wanted to try that then you could have just gone with a stock ship and tried it before deciding if you want to engineer or not.

Finally I'd advise taking a complete break. Set a time limit, say a week or month or whatever. No matter what you feel don't start the game, or read the forums or anything. Play another game or whatever then come back fresh and recharged ready to take on the world again. Experience may vary but it has worked for me a few times when I get fatigued with Elite. I usually come back and do something entirely different to what I was doing when I left, helps avoid getting stuck in a grind loop.

Just a thought. I've had to pretty much re-engineer my fleet (and eng'r for a Chieftain and an experimental I-courier) since 3.0 dropped. Like the OP, I was not looking forward to the grind (and I like engineers) so I decided to do it a different way.

Planet side first, SRV for a couple of sessions at targeted planets which got the elements and minerals.

Then I switched to mission running, mainly trade runs and took the components / data rewards and dropped into the USS's along the routes as well as kill the pirates as they interdicted or dropped in. The long distance super-cruise runs are handy for encoded, combat aftermath and HGE. I did this for about a week, evening sessions of 1-2 hours, max.

I then dropped into the mat traders locations (galmap shows them) and traded up/down as required. After that I did the re-engineering runs.

Its still a grind but it felt secondary to the task, rather than the main reason for logging in.

I understand what you are saying op.
But the improved no mans sky is coming to xbox now so finally at least one more first person space game.
I think i will give that a try because the slow paced narrative and poor development choices are ruining an space experience that could have been so grand.
Many are noticing the disappointment within the ed community you only have to check your friends list.
I only have 1 other left who plays ed and that is the poster above lol

Was going to play Elite...watched TV instead...THE END

Thanks OP! Great insight! I was going to play Elite too...but realised I'd got some work reports to catch up on...bet everyone here REALLY cared about that!

Can't help but think...if Engineering REALLY is your problem...you know just Engineer it up to top G3 status with Common Mats...if you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT handle NPCs without Engineering...
