Proposal Discussion Alpha as a demo/standalone?

I'll jump right in and say: What about the idea of (when the game is released) putting the scope of the Alpha (a dog fighting mini game) up as a cheap (5 pounds?) stand alone game in it's own right?

Why? A few reasons. I've personally purchased a full game based on the demo. This is a big one on steam for me. I might be only slightly interested in a game but not interested enough to fork out cash. But after playing the demo think "Hey this ain't half bad" and get the full thing.

Having said that, look at the game "War Thunder". It's a free to play game that, when it's all said and done, is nothing more than a dog fighting simulator (Except WW2 instead of space). Take another game. Chivalry: In effect just a medieval dog fighting simulator (Except with swords and hammers). Neither game is asking you to part with much money, but they're quick and easy multiplayer fun. And there is a huge market for quick and dirty deathmatch/capture the flag style arcade games.

Now with Elite:Dangerous there will be people who will part with a little bit of money to play a fun dog fighting space game, and then turn to playing the wider universe by buying the rest of the game. It's not just an arena style shoot em up... It's a galaxy simulator!

How? Basically the same as the above games... War Thunder, Chivalry, or even Counter Strike. A bunch of "maps" (Asteroids, space stations, cruisers to battle around) and a bunch of game modes (Death match, TDM, King of the hill, capture the flag, defend the capital ship etc) and then some mechanic to involve upgrades. Either unlocks in the vein of War Thunder/Call of Duty/Chivalry or per match purchases like Counter Strike.

So you end up with a cheap and fun demo style game that is in itself a fun game to play that will have an audience as well as introduces a largely uneducated public into the universe we all know and love called Elite

Sounds reasonable - as I have in the past purchased full versions after playing demo's myself.

Not a bad idea once the game is ready for release, fix the Alpha code and you have a demo. Well, in theory anyway :)

Interesting idea, I think FD will consider this, however I think people mostly these days check out games using what and Let's play videos route, because demos can be (surprise) completely different stuff (like infamous Aliens: CM E3 demo).
