alpha beta backers.... do you worry......

That by playing incomplete bits of the game in unfinished state that by the time the game launches it may have lost a bit of its magic? I am a 2nd beta backer myself.......

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
It does happen sometimes. I'm not playing much of the Wasteland 2 or Starbound betas for similar reasons. However, for whatever reason, I do not feel the same way about ED. I'm just too stoked about it. :p

Not worried ... then again I am pacing myself. Played the Alpha 1.1 a couple of times, liked what I saw, reported what was broken, commented and left it at that.

I am more worried about burning myself out on the forums though :D

Good question Mike.

Hard to say right now - having only seen one Alpha phase. Playing bits of the game isn't going to pall my experience of ED in it's entirety. Though Beta will see the amalgamation all of the bits, I don't think until Gamma will we see the "complete ED" - and I expect that to play like retail.

I'm in the DDF, so alpha spoilage is the least of my problems ;)

You're right I won't get the wide-eyed wonder from watching a real-seeming universe when I already know the rules behind it, but watching the process unfold has created a different kind of magic. In the final game, I'll be able to say "I remember when the AI didn't boost after you when you reversed", and "supercruise is so much fun, I'm really glad we pushed Frontier to think of it", and a thousand other little mementos from 2013 and beyond.

I have had this happen on games before, I was recently questioning whether I should of purchased the 1st Beta.

But this time I willl have my testing hat on and wont be 'playing' to build a career, I will be trying out lots of different things and trying to break them.

Thanks for your thoughts. Regardless I am itching to get my mitts on it, as for burning out on forums. I try my best but seem to keep coming back :)

Not at all... :)

@Liqua... with 4600+ posts at the time of writing I think we can safely say that any risk of burnout is long gone... :D

2nd Beta backer here. A little bit. And the reason is:

What I love about all games but is especially true for the Elite series is exploring the possibilities. Exploring and experiencing the game first hand, discovering new things and unlocking new missions and gameplay options.

The risk I run by following the Alpha so obsessively and getting in on the Beta, is that I'll know all there is to know about the game before it's even finished. So I'll log in with my first commander and go "Hmm... nothing really new and interesting for me to do here"

I feel that's less likely with ED because the actual task of DOING things (like combat) looks like a lot of fun in and of itself. As long as blowing up enemies is fun and satisfying, I'll be a bounty hunter till the cows some home :D

Having said that... once I have my hands on the game, I'm going radio silent. I want to discover the game first hand, not vicariously through other players. No forums for me for a number of months

I'm a bit like Liqua, I fire it up every now and then, and leave it. Haven't touched it now in about a week. But the flight model fun as it is, isn't the reason I played Elite, Frontier or FFE.

Nope ... I'm having fun.. And it is is good practice as I am very rusty at combat :)

Also a DDF member, I find seeing what we have been discussing for the last months finally appear on the screen, just brilliant. Even if it is a sub-set of the final game it is fantastic. I'm certainly looking forward to the rest of the Alpha and the eventual beta and gamma phases.

He can not lose its magic because it is a persistent universe in constant evolution. And as in real life, the magic is there, renewed every day

I don't think I could get bored of ED in its current incarnation as it is too incomplete. For the same reasons mentioned above, I have stopped playing Wasteland 2, as there are many features that have not been implemented such as stealth, and Starbound as they are making big changes that often require restarts and that gets tiring to me after a while.

The only way would be a very extended Gamma. The game releases in March and it will still be new and magical. If it is delayed till September as some think it may, then yes there is a fear, not of burnout, but on release day it is just like the day before the week before and the month before. Nothing we haven't seen and been doing, but just a lot more people may now join in as it is on store shelves. Also the fear so many will see the video's and think they know all about the game, and say lets wait for the first expansion and see where the game is headed.

A delayed release can cause issue as I posted above, but a slight delay till April, should not be an issue. Much more and it may hurt the game more then help it.
