Alpha/Beta backers extra ships, how will we get them?

I'm guessing that most of us have paid sufficient to be a part of the Alpha/Beta program of ED that we will have the option of not starting out in a Sidewinder. I've backed high enough that I can start off in a long range Cobra Mk III, which would be my preference.

This has probably been answered elsewhere, but I haven't seen it...

How will we get our upgraded start ship? I presume when we first create our final Commanders (up to 3 IIRC) we can select what ship to start out in. What about when we die? Will have the chance to start back at the same level for free rather than drop back to the basic Sidewinder (if we can't pay the insurance that is)? If I choose to start a commander with the Cobra MkIII, will I have the chance to use an Imperial Eagle Mk II (which is also an option for my backing level) later on after I die?

Elite: Dangerous- Multiple Ship Ownership

Your Cobra MKIII will be stored in a Starport near your spawn point, apparently. All like your Freagle.

Your additional ships will work like all the ships, you can only pilot one ship at time, if you die with it, you will have to pay the insurance.

I dunno how it works in Ironman Mode.

Thanks, but I don't think that quite addresses the point. That's talking about multiple ships, I'm asking about starting ships.

I will have the option of starting with a ship other than a Sidewinder. Does that mean I will start with a Sidewinder, but my Cobra will be in storage for me to go and collect? What about the Eagle?

For the Eagle the shop is quite clear: "Your very own Eagle fighter ship docked in a secondary location in-game". So start with a Sidewinder and have to get to the Eagle.

For the Cobra the text was "Have the option to start ... with a ... Cobra MK III". The ... depend on what reward level you are looking at. This one seems to be spawning with the Cobra already, but that's just my interpretation.

well i paids for the 150$ package. Does that mean i get a starter ship?

Yes, you get a sidewinder and an eagle and merc pack with the rest of us. You need to fly to the eagle location to collect. Some kickstarter pledges got to start in a cobra or eagle, I imagine if they die they pay insurance or go back to a sidey, or of course start a new commander in a cobra.

The Eagle I meant is the one from the Kickstarter 'Imperial Bounty' level, not the free one everyone gets from the Mercenary pack.

As for the starter Cobra, yes, I should get the option to start with it. But what happens when I die? Is it a one shot start option, or do I get to start with a Cobra after each death?

Ok, did not got that one. Probably it'll be the same for all reward options (Eagle / Cobra).

As there are several threads about this question ongoing my guess is there is no clear statement.
It seems to be overpowered and prone to insurance fraud to get the Cobra for free again and again after death. However for any new Commander you may get the option again.

I would assume that the alternative-start Cobra, Eagle or whatever you have from the Kickstarter, would only be available when you start a new character. If that character then gets her ship blown up and escape-pods back to the last station, then I would expect something similar to the proposed death-penalty options i.e. free Sidewinder, pay insurance or change to another ship you own.

If you later start another/replacement character then you should have the Kickstarter starting options available to use again, if you want.

I hope there will be an option not to get the free ships. I want to start in a Sidey, but if I have two Freagles, and a Compbra (I'm sure someone can do better!) sitting about, I'll struggle to keep honest.

I bet the options are just like in Frontier, and they are described as _options_. If you want to be just Joe Q Average, the gamr won't stop you.

Me, I'll be a Federal Trader trust fund kid :)

It would seem logical that the start ship that you choose for a commander, will become the spaceship of reference to this commander after his death. The removal of the commander and the creation of a new commander (in the account), allowing to change the ship of reference. But this is only my logic

That's how I imagine it will be too. Since the "insurance" system will soon include a loan shark option to go into debt, that would let you keep your reward ship even if you smash it right out of the gate, although I don't know how deep the game will let you go into the hole doing that. After losing a reward ship and not having enough to pay the insurance excess, some players may opt for the free Sidey and a net positive bank account to build up from.
