Alpha/Beta - NDA's

Hey All,

Been away for a while so missed a fair few posts. This might have already been discussed, but i cant find a reference for it...

With the soon to start Alpha testing and the Beta to follow shortly after, will there be an NDA slapped on those involved?

I have read one thread about Alpha testing and comments being made about posting videos online etc.

My previous experience Alpha and Beta are restricted to those involved and strict rules on uploading content, screenshots video etc.

If this has been discussed already, can someone post up a link to the thread please.

Cheers
Aidi

From Ashley Barley in August.....

There will almost certainly be separate forums for alpha and beta testers, but they'll be there for direct feedback. We're not going to try and stop people from sharing things about the game outside of that, so I'm sure plenty of screenshots/video/opinions will be available for you all to check out.

Non Disclosure Agreements are only of use to people who want to keep all the details about what they're doing secret. If that's the case with Elite: Dangerous, then they started off very badly :p

They did pretty good keeping the 'skunkworks' Elite: Dangerous project secret for what... six years, was it?

They didn't exactly kept it secret, there was just nothing to really write home about. They explored concepts, did prototype code...usual stuff in every development house. I think there was always plan to push Cobra engine limitations with Elite 4 in mind.

I think there won't be NDA too, because unless FD has massive legal department hidden somewhere, it's no use, there will be some leaks anyway. Still, as with OR or anything else, it's ain official till it's official.

Not especially. In some ways it can work to positive advantage as well. Blizzard seems to have no problem in sourcing many players into their betas with an NDA and I never see anything posted on youtube, and if it is its deleted pronto.

My main concern re this issue over Alpha footage being widely available is that it could undermine the game if there is some rather unflattering footage that is jumped upon by certain commentators.

All backers made the game possible so if you are sporting a decal on your ship which says you helped fund the game, then I will always pay you respect. So with that said who could be so mean to deny you seeing footage of the game?

I'll stream my play on twitch for all backers to see, if there is no restriction. ;)

Ashley already said he doubts there would be an NDA and as he put it, it would be to hard to police if they tried. So I doubt there will be one, and I am sure the video's people post will show the game in a very positive way.

The worst that can happen is a total blackout, and the questions of why and what is wrong would be far worse. So an NDA would hurt not help.

I don't agree with Ashley. Other games have no problems with NDAs of videos for their games. 'Hard to police' seems more like double speak for, ' can't be bothered' or 'not important'. I don't know how you can be sure there won't be unflattering footage. I suppose the point is moot, it will be what will be, hopefully my concerns won't be realised.

Let me amend my statement I hope all the video's show Elite in a very positive light. I am sure those that pledged for alpha access want the game to succeed and will do what they can to promote it. Of course some will see the video's and nit pick and claim they don't like this or that, but that is inevitable. Time will tell, and I still think there may not be an NDA. This is a KickStarter game and openness is the hallmark of that. I think the FD staff is proud of the work they are doing and want as much talk about it as possible. At least that is my hope.

From all I have seen so far, the game seems awesome, far exceeding my initial expectations. I hope I don't come across as too grumpy or mean; I think I have developed a very unhealthy enthusiasm for ED.

Points about NDAs aside, I am looking forward to the game.. I've been waiting for it for nearly 30 years and I think I might have few screws loose as a result.:(
