Horizons Already managed to crash into side of planet!

Welp this is a bit of a depressing story...

So I just jumped into Horizons about 10 minutes ago and found my ASP out near Barnard's Loop (took a break from Elite a couple months ago) when I loaded in. Found the nearest rocky planet (an extremely beautiful blue-green rock that was closely orbiting a blue-white star) and went for a surface jaunt. Of course I didn't have the SRV but that was ok, I was just going to go fly around the surface and drop into some craters (which was absolutely mind blowingly amazing). So I fly around for a bit, and then decide to head back into populated space to grab an SRV hangar for my ship. But then I re-decided to head over to the night side of the planet. It was very dark over there! So I'm coming out of Orbital Cruise straight down onto the planet, so steep that the Glide mechanic failed. Since it was dark, my depth perception was totally gone. And as you guessed, I hit that big beautiful planet going full speed straight down at a 90 degree angle to the surface. Man that was an amazing explosion.

tl,dr: Flew straight down at full speed into a gigantic rock. Explosive results.

Edit: Forgot to mention, since I was on such a long exploration trip before I took my break from Elite; I had about 1 million in expl. data when I died. :(

What gravity did the planet have? If you go full on at a high gravity world you will go down like a brick in a heavy ship. In fact some ships are un-flyable on anything over about 4g. Some barely fly even at 1g (a FAS can't climb vertical for long at 1g) :p

Didn't even check those stats out for the planet xD I just rushed into it without any planning or foresight.

The good news is, Frontier was true to their word. The Planetary Landing Suite was automatically added to ships which is helpful (or not) for people not near the bubble. Sorry about your misfortune.

Wow mate. I was afraid that would happen to me after a few beers, but now i'll take extra care :O

Oh, there is gonna be so many more explorer sob stories methinks.......!
Anyways, sorry to hear about your loss. Beta def allowed us to experience high G planetary 'landings' without the repercussions...

Thumbs for for the first crash report.
It's weird as they had mentioned a return would be necessary for planetary landings.
I'm glad they re-changed their mind.

I'm totally amazed that I managed to land. I had to google how to launch the SRV though. Then 10 minutes messing with the options to make it drivable :D

Oh yeah, messing with the control options was a fun experience xD

However I do like that the default setup for the SRV stuff was completely empty, so that it didn't conflict with my other highly customized controls.
