Alt-Tab to VR desktop?

Not natively, at least not yet.

I think some have had some luck running games in shell apps like VorpX etc. Not tried it myself so can't comment on the performance drp etc.

Hoping for some change to this soon - both the Rift and the Vive should have in-built native desktop support so you can flip between a VR app and your regular monitor without having to take the HMD off your bonce.
The monitor just needs to be projected on a 3D plane at a comfortable distance.

from what i know the Oculus service is not(yet) a multitasking service. Only one application at a time can run and can't keep another in pause while Alt+Tabbing

I think there should be some 'overlay' for VR. You are just looking 'right' and you can see a screen with desktop, browser, whatever.

Well the Rift does handle the grey-box settings view - so it is capable of some rudimentary 'app-pause'. And the Debug Tool's overlay HUDs show it can display simultaneous data in addition to the app its currently running.

I can't think of any technical reason why it can't multi-task just like the rest of Windows except that it simply hasn't been programmed yet.

I'm sure it will be, and soon... enough people are calling for it on Reddit, here, there and everywhere because its a mainstream feature of Windows.

However, the more likely reason is that it is being programmed, and as a purchasable product. Oculus wouldn't want to tread on a developer's toes while they're developing a core product, now, would they?
Or should this be a standard feature? Even if it was basic like MS Edge, who's only function is to download Chrome or Firefox. :D

I manage to swap between desktop and elite by using Virtual Desktop which is about £10 on Steam. Using a combination of an AutoHotkey script and VoiceAttack and it works great. Found a reddit discussion here https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDange...howto_show_desktop_in_vr_elite_and_bigscreen/
for instructions on the AHK script, scroll down for the Virtual Desktop script. I found Big Screen didn't work for me.

Worth mentioning that Virtual Desktop is now available through Oculus Home for 10.49.

As above, the only way to do it afaik is Elite through Oculus Home and VDesktop through Steam, using AutohotKey script to enable voice commands through VoiceAttack to switch between the two apps.It does work well for some, others like myself can't get it to work all the time despite fiddling for ages!

Could most likely be done using OpenVRDesktopDisplayPortal. It can project most windows and it's possible to use the Vive controllers as a mouse within those windows. Only just tried and I can display my desktop and click stuff in it, chrome and edge wont work properly from my experience, but firefox might - I'll have to try at some point.

I doubt it has a lot of practical use as a desktop/browser display and hence just tried for the first time, but it should work. Great for watching videos in ED though:

Off topic- what the frack is Worf doing in that outfit lol

Can see me using the VR Desktop Portal app for sure (once I get my PC rebuilt...)

Looks like 'V' (the Universal Dashboard) may be the answer!
