Altais Monolith (interesting anomaly / bug) - hoping for more

I discovered this a few nights ago and was pretty blown away by it. It's most likely a terrain generation bug but I really hope it stays in the game. The 'monolith' itself is a little under 6 km in height and sits in a small crater within a much larger impact crater. It's visible from low orbit and you can set your ship down on top of it. This got me thinking of how much more enjoyable and rewarding (not in a financial sense) exploration would be if there were more anomalies for us explorers to discover on planetary surfaces. I think I read somewhere that there is other 'stuff' out there (yet to be found) but I've no idea what this would include. I made a short 2 min video of this find:

This place is well worth a visit and the location details (thanks Viajero for reminding me about coordinates!!) are below.

Location:
Altais 2 B

Coordinates:
46.9085°
1.8115°

With Horizons being released very soon I hope there are many other intriguing 'anomalies' for us to discover, whether they be bugs or not. These could range from intriguing rock formations to ancient relics. Feel free to add anything interesting you come across on planetary surfaces.

Cheers.

Great find and nice video. Love the music and sound effects. And that close up of the SRV that just pans down, down, down...

"2001 a Space Odyssey" comes to mind...

In reality a lot of large craters due to meteor hits produce an upcrop or a small mountain in the middle of the crater due to crust displacement, like when you throw a large rock into a pond and after the initial hit a large splash of water pops up right where the rock hit, same effect. FDev has modeled this effect for large craters, and I think that's what you've found here, but it's been generated very wonky. Looks like Devil's Tower in Wyoming! I'll bet there are "lots" of these all over the galaxy. Lots being a relative term in a galaxy of billions of planets of course. :)

Awesome find though, it gives us one more thing to be on the lookout for: odd stuff in crater basins!

How far from SOL ? I am saving threads for a list of places to visit, away from the bubble for our explorers here.
will start a list next week
(I am not in game at the mo)

Many thanks and 2001: A Space Odyssey was the first thing I thought of too :)

Jumping with the SRV using an Oculus VR must me amazing (and frightening).

You certainly can jump off it in the SRC and survive as the planet has very low gravity. I did it and survived but didn't record it. This person tried it (and recorded it) after I posted my Monolith video on reddit: https://youtu.be/tJFQcZvsYGc

I'm not in game either but Altais is pretty close to Sol, around 100 LY or so.

That is brilliant. Must of felt super good finding that, and it should now and forever be know as ....The Hoppryngil Monolith....
And people will come far to view it. And all shall be good.
Long live the anomaly.

p.s. 3 of us went there and did some base jumping,Cmdr Anuranium and myself did well with the buggy base jump, but our 3rd member didn't :D

Haha, good to hear, and yeah, it's great fun jumping off it. Thanks for adding it to your list :)

Many thanks for that Flimley :D It really was a great feeling coming across this, totally unexpected and it felt quite eerie when I first arrived as the sun was setting behind it. Hopefully there are plenty more anomalies out there for us explorers to find.
