Alternaes to TrackIR?

Hi folks. Just popped round to a mates house to check out his ED setup, was most impressed with the TrackIR but don't want to shell out 150 quid for it as im saving my pennies for a rift on release. Are there other manufactured alternatives (had a look a EDTracker but don't really want/trust myself to build anything and really just want to dive in and use it) or do I just forget about it for now?

Try to get TrackIr at ebay. I get mine there. 35 bucks for the TrackIr 3 Pro version. Works very well with Elite.

FacetrackNoIR

Tryed it, wasn´t impressed... you need a good webcam and the right light to get it work well enough.

I've had a look on ebay for TrackIR, most of the results seem to be for trackIR 5 so still very expensive. I'll keep my eye out though something soon would be cool.

Just use a ps3 cam. $10-20 on Amazon.

What matters is the refresh rate of the camera, not the resolution.

They sell them ready made too now £25/28, I have been thinking the same about building one for a while but I haven't used a soldering iron in 20+ years.

Just sad I didn't realise earlier, wont get it until the new year.

I am using FaceTrackNoIR 1.7, modified (removed IR filter) PS eye camera and 3 IR LEDs mounted on headphone. All tutorials for "how to" can be found on google, cost for the whole setup around 1 hour of work and 15 $. Works great!

How does it work? I assume that you will need a webcam for the EDTracker as well?

EdTracker uses gyros.
Gyros have a little bit of drift. You can (by using the downloadable software) eliminate most of the drift. but I found I was pushing the reset button every time I wanted to turn my head. While it does work, and it is cheap I'm not using it any more as its not worth the hassle imo.

Using an unmodified PSEye with a 3 point Led clip and facetracknoir. Opentrack is supposed to be even better but I never got it to work in Elite for some reason. The PS-Eye costs 9€ + 3€ (I think... can't remember) for the CL-Drivers. the 3 point led is either very cheap if you do it yourself or anything between 5 and 30 euros if you buy a premade. You get rotational and positional tracking this way, meaning you can move around in your seat a bit and look around in E : D. Once you have setup the parameters for the tracker software it's as plug and play as it can get. The 3Point Led tracking is rock solid with facetracknoir and the PS-Eye's refresh rate (99FPS is the max facetracknoir allows sadly) means there is no response lag.

I did see somewhere that there was some newer software out, that might help with the drift, hope so I have been wanting one for ages, having to reset it all the time would be annoying.

I think I saw something about newer parts in the later one's but not 100% sure, have you had yours long?

You can also use Freetrack http://www.free-track.net/english/, A single diode (B4303F1), a battery holder for 2 AA or AAA cells, a 100ohm 1/2watt resistor, and a webcam, for a single point tracker which works fine for 2DOF (which is what I prefer). The cost is the webcam and less than $10 in components. I've been using this setup for months. Turns out I am a little shaky these days and 6DOF will just make me seasick. lol

Thanks for all the replies CMDR's this has been helpful. The EDTracker is looking damn good at the moment. I'm not bothered about it being perfect as I'm looking for a cheap alternative until the Rift goes retail.

Have a quick look around their website, its a few people who worked it all out, and they are making them in their spare time to help out people that can't / don't want to, before they started selling the ready made unit they were telling people where to source the parts and software as well as posting how to videos.

I am pretty sure they come with the software preloaded (the term "flashed" rings a bell), and I saw a GUI in a video that would suggest its reasonably easy to set up.

If you want to PM me I will let you know what I think, mine should hopefully arrive in a week or so.

I know there are lots of older threads covering the subject, but I would be interested to hear how people with the ED tracker are finding it since launch, it looks great in all the videos I have watched.

Is the TrackIR still that expensive even today? Was not paying close attention to it over the years, but for gods sake, it is out for what, 10 years at least? You would expect it to be dirty cheap, since it is pretty far in its product cycle. Guess someone is miling the cow.

It isn't. About 150 quid. I wasa quite surprised as my mate said he got his for 50 odd quid a few years back. As I'm holding out for a rift, there is no way Im spending 150 quid on trackir.
