Engineers Alternate Missions...

CURRENT MISSION:
Drive SRV around a planet for a few hours, hoping to find a random rock.

ALTERNATIVE MISSION:
Hello, Commander. I am pleased to make your acquaintance. I do not deal in credits... I deal in information. I have intel that a nearby outpost is stockpiling Polonium. We require 2T of it; the rest is yours to keep. The outpost is under heavy guard... but if this mission were easy, I'd do it myself. Deliver the cargo within 23 hours, and I might share the whereabouts of some other items that may be of interest to you.

---

CURRENT MISSION:
Enter a nav and shoot random cargo ships, hoping at least one of them drops a particular material.

ALTERNATIVE MISSION:
You may be who I'm looking for, Commander. One of our large cargo ships has been pirated in a nearby system; the thief has stolen several tons of very specialized firmware. We would like you to retrieve at least 12T, and destroy the pirate's ship. If you're successful, we will split the retrieved cargo with you. A warning, Commander. This cargo is our property. If you keep all of it for yourself, I'll put a bounty on you worth more than all of the Brandy in Lave.

---

CURRENT MISSION:
Fly 200LY to station selling rare commodity. Wait for several hours until desired amount have spawned.

ALTERNATIVE MISSION:
Commander, we have decoded an SOS in a nearby Anarchy. It seems a tobacco trader has been become stranded, and naturally will be of interest to the local criminal element. This is no average tobacco; these are fine cigars, the most exquisite rarity. We'll pay you handsomely to liberate 4T of them for us - any more than that are yours to keep... though our friendship will be worth far more than credits. Decide quickly... the trader's clock is certainly ticking.

There. Designing something that was interesting, engaging, and still voluntary wasn't so hard, was it?

I like the suggestions. But just to be clear, what you just did there was to write some words. Actually designing such options may be a trickier process.

Well to be fair we do already have missions just like the ones he stated. I wouldn't mind seeing more missions giving out materials. There are a few but finding one that has the exact material you need is as rare as finding the material out in the wild.

However I would prefer to see more than just the combat missions you gave examples of. We need missions for explorers to follow clues that lead them way out of the bubble like a treasure hunt. And stuff for traders and miners too.

Scripted missions in a computer game? Hard to do? I thought that was pretty much the norm for any computer game dev team for the last 20 years no?
