Alternative to Space Legs

First, I want Space Legs.

If we can't have them, here is an alternative that scratches the "explore the inside of my ship" itch that many of us have, and also meets the "space legs needs to be useful" argument.

Create optional "rooms" inside of our ships, with specific functions, that you transfer into with the same idea as transferring to a fighter or SRV.

Exploration/Scanning: You transfer into an astrometrics lab or some such. Complete with windows, screens, decoration (buyable or earnable trophies/deco for these rooms). This room gives you access to the FSS system/surface scanning functions.

Engineering: You transfer into your engineering room. Windows, screens, decorations, etc - whatever is relevant for that ship design. Here you can do in-ship pinned engineering in flight. Synthesis, etc.

Cargo: You can manage your cargo while being able to see the containers etc.

Quarters: You can mostly enjoy your decorations, the view, etc - with access to an in-game logout via the bed.

Each ship has it's own unique designed rooms. Beautiful in VR (you can even walk around in them like in larger cockpits). Wholly expandable with new ship functions. Purchasable decorations from the Store. Earnable decorations from in-game play.

Thoughts?

I think what there working on in the "new era" of elite is space legs. Could be wrong but i cant think of anything else that would change elite more then beyond other then that and atmospheric landing but i doubt thats coming any time soon

I agree, "space legs" sounds awesome, but I'm sure there's more to it, so this is not a bad idea as an alternative. I've had similar thoughts.

I love the idea of a placeholder for 3D walking around, much like the games of the 1990s. For example, after clicking "starport services" instead of a hologram in your cockpit you could fade and reappear in that little building across from your ship, looking out at your ship with some minor animations of people refueling, cargo loading, etc. as the normal menu hologram opens up. All the same coded functions, same everything, just a different background so make it feel more alive. Like in "X-Wing Alliance" or even "Wing Commander."

Haha! that'd be cool!

to the OP, your idea would be a major stepping stone to space-legs (if that ever happens) since it would require a LOT of modeling and texturing to make rooms for each of the (37 or so?) ships. but I'd love to know what the inside of my Krait MII looks like since 1/3rd of the ship is a fighter bay!

your suggestion is in the same area as what I have been thinking about...

I based my idea around a player base, but adding a location where we add space legs but avoid doing it in the rest of game, until all the other stuff is solved regarding content for it etc .

So basically, I was after being to build my own planetary base, so in your base you could build rooms, corridors, etc and also can build our own trophy hangar! Where we can display all our ships. if build a big enough hangar that is. These bases are owned by the player building it, so no real cooperation, but player groups can build bases on the same planet have a planet based transfer system... so you can visit your friends bases on the same planet.

So where does space legs come into play here?
Well inside the base you can run around as much as you want, look out windows etc, etc, but you cannot exit the airlock to walk outside. (yeah that sucks.... but with no content
outside it would be useless anyway).

You could also walk to the underground railway system and travel to a friends base, cue loading screen, sitting in a train going down a tunnel...

You could also walk down into your trophy hangar, and here you can drive your SRV around, as it will be HUGE if you have alot of ships here... you can enter/exit the SRV, and you can walk around your ships and also walk inside your ships and explore them on the inside, also use all the airlocks etc to get ontop of your ships to explore them, you could also get into the captains chair and select to move ship to the landing pad, and can now see how your ships is being moved towards the landing pad elevator and then moved topside. And now you can no longer exist the chair, unless you select option to enter station....

After spending time in games that is mainly about moving about in person, I do realise that this will give us even more time just moving around, I do not like the potential future of landing on a station, and then having to walk to the location where the various mission boards are, and then walk over to location for the various contacts to hand in bounties, war bonds etc. and then having to walk back to the ship...

I love the concept of Spacelegs, but I do also realise that if it got implemented in all aspects of the game, we will spend huge amount of times walking (running) everywhere.... for mundane tasks... So that is why limited Spacelegs under certain circumstances is makes sense.

The No Man's Sky Visions trailer gets almost double the amount of views (183k vs 100k for the Beyond Teaser trailer).

Frontier should be aware that Space Legs will make ED a lot more popular. Many people play NMS now precisely, because ED doesn't have EVA or lush planets yet.

We're still stuck in the pilot seat, SRV and nearly barren rocky worlds. [down]

Create optional "rooms" inside of our ships, with specific functions, that you transfer into with the same idea as transferring to a fighter or SRV.

If they add specific rooms they should let us walk or float to it. If there's nothing in other ship areas then just keep it sealed. A teleportation feature breaks immersion imo.

There is a very easy alternative for moving inside the ship, teleport, the one that X-plane uses, but that's nothing compared to space legs.

I guess they are aware, just that integrating that is not easy ...
