So why exactly those console-sized PCs? I just don't get the point. Are you really that short on real estate that you need a choker case that is about 10cm smaller than a decent small-factor case? Truly I will never understand those things. Hopelessly pointless.

My guess is living room. If OP's house is anything like mine, then actually yes, he doesn't have much real estate.

Thx for moving Bongo.

I would have space for a full sized PC, but dislike the idea because honestly I only want a top notch EDH experience that allows me to hook up a serious screen estate and a X56 throttle / stick and use it for my iTunes music library. Having a mid or full sized PC in the living room is not what I would like, that's why I find the Intel NUC interesting as I could slot it into a shelf.

Sadly though, while powerful eneough with the Vega chip, I read a report on the german c't about it and the inacceptable downside is the fan noise which is alledgedly quite substantial.

On the other hand, while thinking about it, for what the NUC offers power wise, you get a better spec with a regular PC, and that could be eunnign silent with the right components.

I could imagine to build a Ryzen system myself though if I would compromise on a box in the living room.

On the spec side of things, what would you consider to be good for EDH. Is 16 Gig Ram sufficient? I wonder whether EDH uses threading or prefers core power, if threading is fully utilised, threadripper would be an interesting CPU, but if not, there is no need for it.

Phew, Pandorra's "box", really. ;)

P.S. You're right the small factor looks not that intrusive really!

There are lot of mATX cases out there with very understated and clean design. Since it's in their very idea to blend into the room. Just need to do some research, and find a way to integrate it neatly into your space.
Obviously, they're not as tiny as those console-sized PCs. However, they usually don't come with the same drawbacks either. Better cooling, quieter operation, still room for expansion or entirely new build inside the same case just as with any PC.

On performance side of things - I wouldn't go for anything with crazy core counts. Harder to cool, especially in tiny case. Also, despite EDH having good multi-core utilization higher clock speeds are still king. In all of gaming, really.

Indeed.

And most small cases now a days aren't as bad as 15 years ago.
A small case doesn't have to be a hot case anymore, in fact some can achieve better airflow than regular ones.

I can certainly see more point in a small understated case than a giant tower of blinking LED's.
