Newcomer / Intro Alternative to Xbox 360 controller

I was getting along just fine exploring and selling the data using the trusty old Xbox 360 controller. I was docking with just enough cash and exploration data to buy my first ship upgrade, an Eagle, when the battery decided to conk out at the crucial moment and crash me in my docking pad. Oh how I laughed. :-|
So I am now looking for a HOTAS stick. I had my eye on the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X but it's been out of stock everywhere and now the price seems to have been bumped up. Could anyone recommend me a stick with throttle controls in a budget price range? Failing that, a good wired joypad?

You should have been using a "Wired" x box360 controller. Then you would not have had the problem!

The game plays quite well with keyboard and mouse once you rebind the flight keys to something that is a little more usable. I use a setup very similar to the one found in The Harmless' Guide to The Galaxy newbie thread (although I have roll on A/D and left/right Thrusters on Q/E, and 12.5% throttle increments).

Seriously? Mine flashes at me when the battery gets low, but it does loose connection quicker than if you are just playing on the xbox with a wireless controller. You need a spare battery pack mate.

I love my wireless xbox controller, but I have got thumb stick extenders on which make it soo much better. I also use a wireless keyboard so I can lounge back and chill while playing..ahhh relaxing..

I must have been so engrossed in the game that I didn't notice the flashing. I did have the spare batteries right next to me but i had about 1 second to change them and shouting at Voice Attack to "STOP" freaked it out a bit lol. Battery couldn't have dropped out at a worse time. I think I will probably invest in a joystick but I haven't decided which one yet. I did try the mouse but it didn't feel good at all.
