ALWAYS have credits ready to cover REBUY COSTS

Do this if you want to keep your ship after death. If you think Sidewinder is the best ship anyway, you can ignore this hint.

Extended tip A: have some more credits to be able to buy cargo after death (important for traders)
Extended tip B: If you got bounty, make sure you have enough credits to pay off the bounties on death too.

I just ignored it. I'm sure I won't regret it at all.

This needs to go sticky!

I liked the tip someone posted in antother thread: if you do end up in a pinch check if you can re-buy your ship if you uncheck some modules.

well, you're right in the message but sorry, the whole insurance thing is utter nonsense, anyway.

No insurance on this planet (and I dare to say in the whole universe) is payed AFTER case of damage!

Why doesn't FD just change the current system? They could still make it as option, pay beforehand or afterwards.

And in this galaxy? And 1300 years from now? Maybe you know the answer?

*Sigh* what you are paying on ship destruction is in essence an excess, which you pay in on this planet btw. Your insurance is bought when you buy the ship, hence why you have insurance cover of 90-whatever % you get depending on when you bought into Elite.

Can you give me name of your insurance company, because I'd love a policy that doesn't have a deductible.

Meh, credits in bank is for wusses. I'm flying a cobra with a rebuy cost of lemme check... 46,121 credits. Money in bank = 468.

Hope I don't get interdictified by an elite anaconda... :D

edited to add: I am also flying drunk. This is how I do ironman mode until we get the real thing.

edited to add: oh well. Nothing happened. Now my credit is at 106,558. Time to load up on progenitor cells and risk it all again.

Another good advice is a backup ship or 2 if you are too careless in terms of keeping track of the rebuy credits.

But again, everything doesnt orbit around the most expensive ship. Biggest fun is the cheaper ships you can lose without much or any penalty.

Makes sense, but if you got killed a couple of times after eachother, you won't have enough left, simple math, you have to make new credits and when you get iced before you can make those new credits, you eventually run dry.

The insurance policy is bought before the start of the game (presumably through the Pilot's Federation) and it may also explain why you start with so little money but can still own a spaceship. What you pay after damage is the deductible, similarly to home owner's insurance I don't need to pay for potential insurance in advance when I buy new appliances/whatever, but if they break I pay a part of the cost and the insurance company pays the rest. The only difference in Elite: Dangerous is that you don't have to pay monthly/yearly fees to maintain the policy, but this is an understandable compromise given that you don't actually live in the game world.

The sticky thread should be about potentially game experience ruining player errors in general.
-Always check your insurance excess and keep enough cash in reserve.
-After an insurance claim, downgrade your ship/equipment to have sufficient cash for the next accident.
-Re-assign the jettison all cargo and the boost key to avoid accidents. The latter should not be too close to the acceleration key in case no analogue throttle is used.
-Pay any bounties ASAP at an Outpost (or learn about silent running).
-Pay any fines within one day.
-Do not fly without a shield generator, especially in open game. Shield cells do not replace your generator.
-Watch power levels during outfitting, so you don't run out of oxygen after entering a fight far away from a station.
-Do not buy a new ship without having the possibility to upgrade the FSD (availability and cash).
-Always keep a heat sink equipped in case you need to do a silent running docking or exit SC too close to a sun.

Feel free to add...

Don't be the Vortigern of ED and act before you think. The spell will be broken sooner or later. That, and this must indeed never leave page one ever. ;)

Losing everything us a bit extreme. Aside from the obvious (pay policy in advance, warn on launch) they could at least give players their bare hull back (which is about 15% of the value of a fully tooled ship). That's plenty of pain.

As obvious as it may seem, people do make mistakes.
