Am I forever stuck with an overflow of animals?

Some of my animals have been getting a little extra freaky lately, which has caused an abundance of offspring faster than I expected, who are also fighting for alpha dominance when they get of age (fairly quickly) my problem is a lot of these animals I can't trade out, or release to the wild so I end up stuck with them in storage forever.

Is this a bug? Is there something else that can be done that I'm missing? Or am I going to have to create new separate enclosures for the overabundance of animals that I'm stuck with until they get old and die?

Ah! I guess I thought that by the time something was already a year, it would be able to be tradeable. My guess is that it's dependant on each animal's lifespan individually?

Yes, how long it takes them to grow up depends on the species. As long as the game shows them as young animals, you have to wait. As soon as they are listed as adults or get the notification that they have matured, you can get rid of them :) It is somewhere in the Zoopedia, too. I think monitors take (unfortunately) four or even six years to mature, I always use contraceptives because they get offspring quicker than you can sell.

Also remember they don't mature in the Trade Center, they are actually in "pause mode".

If managing animals get's to much of a job, use contraceptives.

As others have mentioned, you will need to wait until the animals are mature enough before you can trade or release them. They don't mature if kept in the Trade Center so make sure you set your zoo up to accomodate them for a while. Careful use of of contraception for your animals will help ensure you avoid a population boom.

Create an organised breeding program.

1) Start with species that only require 1 male,
2) Get as many females as Zoopedia recommends.
3) When the babies are matured, sell or release ALL males, keep the females.
4) Introduce 1 new male.
5) Repeat.
