Am I just that terrible at space combat? Probably

First off, love love love this game so far, despite early frustrations. Did all the training missions and working on the videos. Finished all the training missions except one.

The elite combat.

I have no problem taking out the first guy, but when the second shows up and gets behind me, I can't get him in my sights again, no matter what I do. Had this same problem in game while trying to take down a bounty I happened upon.

What am I doing wrong? Outside of using the DS4 controller. No HOTUS for me atm.

A couple of tips:
Keep it Blue - adjust your throttle so you're in the blue section, you ship turns at its fastest when you're in the blue zone.
Opposite rudder and lock - If you're pushing your nose down, use the up thruster (and vice versa). This helps your turning (try this in normal space first. get about 10km from a station then face it so you can count how long the turn takes, then start a turn, do the first loop without using the thrusters, then the second with the thruster one way and the third the thruster the opposite, you should notice the difference. :)
FA Off Is Your Friend - Not permanently, as that's a whole different ball game, but if you toggle FA Off during a turn you get the tightest, fastest way to point your guns at your enemy there is in game.
Yaw Is Slow - really, don't try to use yaw to turn . . . it does help during turning, but not on its own. ;-)

OP, don't worry I'm in exactly the same position. Did all the training except that one during which I either messed up the flying/throttle control bit (recently helped by changing my control scheme a fair bit), or by flapping with fire groups and power management. I'm confident a bit more practice and it'll all come together though. Stick with it! :)
