Am I missing something about Silent Running?

I read debate over whether chaff slows down a scan, prevents it or does nothing to stop scans.

Never tested it myself but would be nice to know.

I can confirm that chaff interrupts KWS, at least if you scan NPCs. IIRC there has been some discussion about NPCs ignoring chaff when they scan you, don't know if that is fixed though.

Squidoflove made an interesting and informative post on Youtube concerning Smuggling. His take on it is to go in fast in something maneuverable. Guy has close to a billion CR, must be doing something right.

I just boost in with full throttle coming in on the sides, then flips over and go in through the letterbox with full speed. I then hit the landing gear and full stop once I'm inside. Takes practice, but I rarely get scanned and if they do they won't get me in time.

I smuggle for a living here and I have never used the silent running option (what key activates it? lol) or chaff (don't even own it) or heat sinks for that matter on my Cobra.

I have always used the speed method. Do your best to line up before dropping from SC Then 4 pips to engine and open the throttle wide. Get you docking permission asap so you have an idea of where you are going once inside (just inside the opening or further in). Get lined up and when you see the "red star" thru the slot drop the throttle to blue and scoot right in. 98% of the time if the scan even comes it's too late and you are inside before it can complete.

Once in a great while I pay a fine but that usually only happens when I do a poor job of lining up before I drop from SC, like when I can only see the side of the station. If I can see the slot I am in before they even know I was there.

And yes you can get scanned at outposts, usually Military ones so take heed of who is around when you drop in. If you see a Navy vessel or the like then speed in and land quick and drop into the hanger before they notice you. I actually get scanned more often in instances such as this because of the time it takes to settle the ship before the pad goes down.

Just go in fast (try boosting from some way off, so you can still hit the brakes once inside), throttle down right before the blue slot. I try to land like that every time, since it's the most efficient way anyway. Even if you know how it's done, you will get caught a couple of times, like 1 out of 10, but that's not an issue.

From a role playing perspective I prefer the 'go cold / go silent' approach but, as others have pointed out, it's not actually as effective as running the gauntlet on boost. Not only that but turning all your modules off to get frosty and then turning them all back on once inside is really time consuming, particularly as you then have to wait for shields to recharge. Shame really.

Personally I only use silent running when leaving stations.
Rushing into station from 8km out quicker and easier, unless T9 docking or leaving :)

Also silent running useless if you keep changing speeds and using thrusters.

Using silent running didn't seem to raise the ship's temperature noticeably and didn't even report that my shields were offline until I hit the landing bay. It's like it didn't kick in for a minute or so.
Am I missing something obvious?
Fly safe.

check your controls. it sounds af if your toggle is wrong.

Silent running might be useful for smuggling but definetely not for combat.

that's not true. have a look here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnPWgn9uIw0

Did you try flying normal and using chaff when scanned?

chaff doesn't help against scans. that's a reoccuring myth.

To be honest, considering the drawbacks (heat build up and shield shutdown), silent running seems to be a little underpowered. I think it needs tweaking to make it a more viable and interesting mechanic/tactic.

yes.

btw.: boosting into a station combined with heatsink(s) is even more foolproof. keep your heat under 20%. even works with a python.

am really sorry about that, i love smuggling with silent running (it works in a small ship like cobra, adder very well). but you only do it for rp-reasons.

101% This ^ I just don't see the fun with just blasting in lit up like a Christmas tree. If I'm smuggling I want to feel like some stealth is involved, purely for immersion reasons.

Shutting down modules is time consuming, but what's the rush? I like to soak up the atmosphere, iced up windows, heavy breathing from no life support, it all adds to the enjoyment for me.

But of course, each to their own!
