Newcomer / Intro Am I missing something? (hunter-killer)

Not really new to the game, but new to hunter-killer missions and would like to ask:

What do I do?

I had three locations to search for Zaha Payson.
I looked in one of the locations, and got the actual location from a NPC.

Simple enough.

Next, I spent 30 minutes in Supercruise going in and out until I finally found him sitting in an Orca, un-aggro'd to me.

I scan him, find no warrant at all, and open fire.
Receiving no bounty for firing at him, I took it as a sign that he was in-fact not innocent and kept going.

After about 8 minutes of shaving down his health he blew up and....

Nothing.
He was scanned the whole time, and it was his exact name, in the exact system.

Thinking I had to go to the station to get my bounty I went and looked at the place I started.
Nothing in Bounty Board.
Nothing in Contacts.

Am I supposed to have a K-Warrant scanner in order to do these if they don't have Warrants?

I feel a little cheated that I spent an hour looking for him and killing him only to be shown that I can't be payed.

That sounds like it might have bugged out, only thing I can suggest is trying a relog? If that doesn't work try cruising the system again, he might reappear. A tip on that, you can super-cruise at minimum velocity and still get just as many USS to check. I normally have a browser set to cover only half my screen that I tab out to, so I can keep an eye on my nav list for a USS to appear while I read the forums ^^

If it makes you feel any better, I do these missions all day every day and I've never had a bugged one so you must have been unlucky. I *do* use a kill warrant scanner on my targets though, maybe you're right and it's related?

I'll go ahead and try the relog.

If not, then I think i'll just quit and wait a few days until I have my HOTAS to play again.

It just kind of dampens my fun a lot.

Yeah if they come out with as clean you need a KWS and then they come as wanted

What's a relog?

How do you track someone from a hunter killer mission? I have flown around for ages at the mentioned systems in supercruise scanning all the ships in the hope to find the individual? Should I visit USS or space station? whats the method to find the target?

A relog is exiting and reloading.

Visit USSs to find the targets.

Im new to everything in this game. and struggling to complete these hunter-killer missions also.

I have found so far that in the missions with multi locations if I hit a couple of USS in one location I have eventually come across a group of ships who will send me a message saying something like that guy your looking for is headed to XXXX system. I fly over there and in the first USS I hit there they are. (usually).

However The next step is killing me. (I think im probably not kitted out right or something) right after I find them they open fire and kill me in the first shot. This is extremely frustrating after spending all this time hunting them down. What kind of ship should I have and setup to be able to take on these missions? or should I just be quicker to get out of the way?
