Am I the only one who hates the look of most ships in this game?

To be honest the art direction of Elite Dangerous, compared to Star Citizen, is more industrial, dark and gritty which matches the game quite perfectly.
I've learned to appreciate them (love my Asp), but overall the art direction of Star Citizen has a bigger 'wow' factor.

Elite's ships are in essence more what I would expect in 3300 to be honest, functional and bulky, there is no reason to have a sleek aerodynamic design in space.

You find it beautiful ? Efficiency and robustness are the priorities in the space

I grew up with shuttle launches, including the first one, so yeah, I actually love the way those look. Sometimes form and function IS what makes something beautiful. Elegance of purpose, perhaps.

The shuttle is the main reason I wish they'd make a black/white paint scheme for the Adder, even if I'm no longer IN one - a little "nod and wink" if nothing else. It's an inexpensive ship but it served me really well and I sort of have a soft spot for it at this point. (Probably because so many dislike it...)

I have absolutely no problem with how the ships look. I want more variety eventually but the look itself seems fine.
Totally agree. SC ships remind me of the Teladi ships in X3 - seems like they were cobbled together out of spare parts. I always preferred the sleek look of the Paranid ships, or the organic look of the X2 Boron ships.

Argon ships were the best looking I think from a "Human Scifi" perspective.

From tends to follow function.

I tend to think that SC's ships look like early Airfix kits, or fragile racehorses if you prefer, whereas FDev's look like Tamiya tanks, or powerful workhorses.

Now I do like early Airfix, but, OH SO FRAGILE!!!! Imagine a mote of paint hitting one of those at 1,000Km/s, vs a Cobra...

The space shuttle isn't the best example for efficiency, i guess... :p
Using wings considered too inefficient even for low orbit and return flights today, so I'm not a fan of putting them on interstellar spaceships.

Ever seen a container ship and thought "gosh, that's one beautiful cargo vessel?"

love it, +rep to you sir

As to the actual question, I think ED has plenty of good looking ships, and quite a few ugly ones. I also like the over-design of SC ships because it's nice to get lost in detail sometimes. I'm just not sure if a fleet in SC would look like a garbled mess or not whereas a fleet in ED looks more like a fighter wing. ED is more iconic shape than crazily-detailed design.

I quit eliek them. They generally look very industrial - like they are designed for a purpose, rather than to look cool. Which, in itself, to me, makes them look cool.

The Clipper is very sleek, quite like the look of that too...

I'm looking forward to the new ships to come.

What really grinds my gears about Elite's ships are exposed canopies. They look like once the shields are down, the pilot could be killed with one stray shot. Big ships deliberately place the pilot on the exterior. I really can't suspend my disbelief on that. Who would ever think that ASP is a good idea?

At least SC consistently doesn't care about common sense.
