Am I the wrong type of player for this game?

Back in the 80s I played Elite and enjoyed it a great deal. In the meantime I played some similar games but nothing came ever close. Then I heard of "Elite Dangerous". I didn't want to be a guinea pig, so I didn't enlist to be a beta player, but waited instead until the game was more or less finished. That was in december 2014. At this point I thought only bug fixes and add-ons will be made, but instead it seems like the whole game concept is changed with every update.

At first I noticed that ED was made very beautifully. At the same time I was shocked of the slow pace of the game (I usually play fast paced shooters on the internet). Everything you do takes a long time (getting out of a starport, entering super cruise, docking, even the fights). But nonetheless I enjoyed playing the game. In those 6 months I spent a ridiculously large amount of time with ED. Now I have a maxed out Python and assets of half a billion credits.

The first big shock was the Python nerf. I worked hard to get the Python, I enjoyed finally having it and two days later it got nerfed to a sitting duck. Fights became boring with this bad maneuverability. I bit the bullet and kept going. But with every update the game got worse for my taste. The upgrade 1.3 is terrible.

1. Today a ship I didn't even had a lock on bumped into my ship, got destroyed and I have now a bounty on my head of 5000 credits for "murdering" said ship. I'm not even allowed to clean my status by paying a fine, but have to wait 4 days and avoid this system for this time to avoid being shot at by security vessels. Unfortunately it's one of my favourite systems.

2. Shields don't get filled up with repairs on a dock. Even if I log out, wait an hour and log in again, the shields are still depleted. So I have to actually sit and wait and watch the shield bars growing.

3. Now I have to make a front scan to see the names of the ships close to me. When I'm surrounded by several ships and one "Tony Povey" asks me what my cargo is, I could just select him in the list up until 1.3. Now I have to check every ship by bringing it to my front to find him. This takes a lot of time and is simply boring.

4. With the new AI the NPCs play hide and seek with me. It takes forever to keep them in line with my guns and the whole fight got boring. This reminds me of the ballet fights of Elite II.

5. When 1.3 came out, I had over 14000 bounties claimed (pirates and combat zones). My combat rank is "deadly" and the progress bar showed 54%. After that I killed over 1000 ships and the bar hasn't moved one bit. In conflict zones I only encountered "Mostly Harmless" and "Novice", at nav points of anarchy systems the occasional "Competent", so please don't give me the usual "you have to kill elite ranked ships to advance in your combat rank".

6. Since 1.3 the pirates in anarchy systems seem to have gone. In the past I encountered big fishes with more than 300,000 credits bounty. Nowadays I can be lucky if a pirate has a bounty of 20,000 credits.

7. One of the most important points: I work hard to buy an expensive ship, max it out for a fortune, but it doesn't feel better nowadays. It's like a module is 1000 times more expensive than the original one but only 1% better.

8. It feels like the Python shields have been nerfed again.

I guess Elite Dangerous tries to attract new players who like MMORG and who don't like to be owned by a player who has worked for months to steer a better ship. But the original Elite was a development game. This contradiction is solved by giving players the impression they can buy better equipment but in the end everything is about the same. If a player like myself can buy a viper (142,931 credits), don't change anything about the modules and go out and kill a Python (56,978,179 credits) easily, then something's wrong.

It would be very nice to receive some constructive replies, instead of the usual "it's your fault, you seem to be inexperienced" put downs. Maybe someone agrees with one or two points I made. Or maybe I'm just the wrong type of player for this game.

I agree here, if a player in a viper that is very cheap can kill a very high priced ship, something is very wrong. I believe that players in larger and stronger ships should not have even a slight chance to be killed by an eagle or viper, unless we are talking about a wing of 2-3. I agree that making stronger and more expensive ships able to be killed by a lower ships is a bit stupid, unless, as I said, it is a wing of 2-3.

This is contradictory - the MMORPG players would be the ones that want their ship that can't be touched by 'lower level' ships, as it becomes the purple gear.

Also, the Python is by no means a sitting duck.

The NPCs are a bit weak but:
- as of 1.3 I am not so sure about my chances in a Viper against a master+ Python
- you stand no chance in hell soloing a Python with a Viper in PvP

Agreed, the Python is no way a sitting duck. The ship is a beast, if anyone in a large ship (Python/FDL/Conda) is getting killed 1 on 1 in PVP by a Viper, they should look at their own ability, not the ship.

Dedicated fighters have a combat advantage but really limited cargo capacity.

Trade ships have massive cargo capacity but are rubbish in a fight.

The multirole ships (python) don't excel at either but can be used for both with slightly less effectiveness than dedicated craft.

Wrong tool for the job = bad results. For combat try a smaller dedicated ship, you might find you enjoy the game more with hair-raising high speed dogfighting (and you have less to lose). No ship is (or should be) an easy win button, the most heavily equipped anaconda is still an enormous target that can't manouvre quickly, but one mistake by an attacking fighter and he's gone the anaconda has to repeatedly make mistakes to lose and can escape at any time.

I reset my save just before 1.3 and am really enjoying myself in my cheap badly equipped fighter (haven't died yet but it's been close a lot).

Actually the Python is the best ship at PvP if armed accordingly ( only rivaled by the Conda, the Clipper (also multi role ships) and the FDL - to big for a real fighter )

Agree, this is annoying - shields should recharge fast in Orbis/Coriolis stations (you have to get in, land, turn around and fly out making it not an easy fix for your shields). On log out, it should record your logout time, so when you log back in, you get as much shield would have recharged in that time (ie a few seconds... not much... sever hours? Full shields.

Agree on this one - an unhelpful change.

This is simply lol-worthy - you want them to sit still in your gunsights? "Sit still dang it! No, No, No, that will not do - come back!"

6. Since 1.3 the pirates in anarchy systems seem to have gone. In the past I encountered big fishes with more than 300,000 credits bounty. Nowadays I can be lucky if a pirate has a bounty of 20,000 credits.

Michael Brookes has stated that RES sites are not currently working as intended.

8. It feels like the Python shields have been nerfed again.

I disagree, they feel the same to me as 1.2 (i.e. post Python nerf). I have a fully-fit Python (mostly RES bounty work) and its shields are pretty strong, even under attack from multiple ships. Sometimes my shields do get knocked down badly, and I have to work to dodge incoming fire, retreat for a spell, or expend shield cells - but that simply adds excitement and variety to me otherwise mowing down SJA's finest. :D

It would be very nice to receive some constructive replies, instead of the usual "it's your fault, you seem to be inexperienced" put downs. Maybe someone agrees with one or two points I made. Or maybe I'm just the wrong type of player for this game.

Hope I met your standards.

Yes, this.
OP, what activities are you doing? Sounds like the wrong type of ship, not necessarily the type of player!

If flown well, yes. If you can fly well you'll do well in anything (within limits).

A badly flown anaconda/python bought as the games uber ship for risk free combat with the profit from trading is an easy kill in any well flown ship, and about the most fun you can have (IMO).

So... how many hours have you played Elite? At what point do you think you have gotten your moneys worth in terms of $/hour?

I agree with the op that the overall game has gone backwards since 1.3 I've had the most tedious week of gameplay since first loading ED in December and I play 3+ hours per night, 5 days a week.
The lack of non harmless targets is ridiculous, yes some do appear in some locations occasionally and some USS points contain valid targets but in general the combat situation has completely changed. I can only hope this IS a defect to be resolved.
I like the new ship AI, I'm concerned that Harmless ships are now as tough (hull and shields) as 1.2 Elite combat ships (fact) and I ditest the new bounty system.
I started the week at 72% toward Deadly and after 12 hours of play with the sole intent of increasing that percentage I am only 75%. I destroyed a LOT of ships in that 12 hours but they tended to be minnows. Last week on 1.2 I'd be at 80%+ by now.
The game has changed and it does not suit the gameplay that I've enjoyed for the last SEVEN months. I've been annoyed, frustrated and disappointed this week.
I intended to buy some ELITE store clothing this week because I was proud of my involvement with the game. I did not do so.

This is irrelevant if the QUALITY of experience during those hours has suddenly changed.
I can get my money's worth out of FARCRY-4 in 30 hours because it's fun and interesting and fulfilling.
If Elite is tedious because of the changes then 6000 hours for £10 is still not worth the price.

Actually if someone in a high price ship like a Python is letting themselves get killed by a cheap Viper then something IS very wrong..... their piloting ability for instance!

If it didn't keep you entertained for those 6000 hours, why did you put them in? I don't get it.

Nail hit firmly on the head.
Since release, ED has been firmly on the track of dumbing down to be a more run of the mill MMO (not sure about the RG bit).
It is easy to understand the commercial reasons behind that trend, but it is a real shame for us purists who loved the original game.

The irony is that those purists were the very ones whose backing of the original vision was instrumental in facilitating the birth of ED. Lost dreams.

I wonder what David Braben really thinks about the direction he has been forced into taking the project, if he can divorce his thoughts from business constraints.

if you play a tedious game you dont like and is boring for 6000 hours, you seriously need help.

If I could get back the game I bought in december 2014, I'd be happy to play it for the rest of my days. Well, for a long time, anyway.
