Ambassadors needed for PAX East in Boston

Rezri, so glad to see the writeup and lots of pics! The enthusiasm from the players at PAX South was amazing. So many positive comments and excitement. Glad you had it the same at PAX East!

Edward and Alison were at PAX South (along with Eddie Symons and Michael Gapper), and they all brought their A-game and worked 110% showing off Elite, talking to the reporters, and entertaining us Ambassadors. I tried to explain that in my PAX South thread... the few naysayers on the forums will never realize how much effort the Frontier Team puts in until they actually see them in action.
Here's the PAX South thread/pics, for those who missed it: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=103240&highlight=

So, would you say that's an experience you'll never forget?! :) And how many new Twitch viewers do you think you'll have after this?? :D

I'll definitely never forget this past weekend. Simply too much enthusiasm, too many incredible people, and so much impressive talent there to ever let it slip from memory.

These folks do work their tails off. The naysayers saying so may simply do so out of ignorance. I can't fault them for not seeing the team in action, but I am now among the many that have seen them in person doing so. Impressive isn't strong enough a word to describe it. These folks are machines. They just don't stop.

Who knows on the twitch viewers? :D We'll see. Regardless of that, it was just incredible meeting so many awesome people that wanted a chance to play, or just to chat. My face hurts from smiling all weekend - because I couldn't stop. It was just such a great time had by all.

Hello Commanders!

First, please let me express the enormous gratitude that I, the rest of the Ambassadors, and the epic team of Frontier staff have for each and every person that was incredibly kind enough to stop by the Elite: Dangerous booth at PAX East.

To those that chose to simply observe, and to the huge crowd of folks that chose to wait in line to try out the game: Thank you. Endless thank-yous. Even after driving back home last night, and still recovering this morning, I find myself overwhelmed at the enthusiasm, excitement, and kindness that all of you exhibited. It was a genuine pleasure meeting each and every one of you.

I can't thank Frontier enough for the experience that was this entire weekend. These folks at Frontier really are some of the classiest, kindest people I've had the great pleasure of meeting and working with, and these folks work HARD! Long hours, little to no sleep, yet they still keep charging forward. Big salute to the folks at Frontier, and all those I got to meet Thursday through Sunday. o7

Without further ado, here's an attempt to share just a few photos from this weekend. I'm no photographer, so pardon the amateur pics from my phone :) I'll have to post them as links, as the photos are too large for the forum image size limits.

Thursday afternoon: After meeting the other Ambassadors and some of the Frontier team at the hotel, we head over to the Convention center to assist with setting up the booth. Upon entering the expo hall itself, this is the sight I'm greeted with. A gigantic venue, and a well-oiled machine of exhibitors and their teams setting up their booths for the convention: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2096.JPG

A quick snap of one of the corner risers with Elite logo blazing: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2098.JPG

Thursday night: (left to right) Jessie from Frontier, Ambassador Ryan, and our Community Manager Ed Lewis. We have a late dinner out on Thursday night after we finish setting up the booth. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2104.JPG

There were many laughs. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2116.JPG

Friday Morning: It's early. I've donned the uniform. Ready to go! https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2118.JPG

Friday Morning: At the venue, before doors opened to public. Excitement is in the air, game is ready to show! https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2119.JPG

Friday Morning: Doors opened. Folks swarm to the booth. Players take their seats! Ambassador Dr Wookie points out he's ready for another player! https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2120.JPG

Friday: The queue grows and grows! Players check out the game on the Rift, Ambassador Ryan gives a walkthrough on how to fly. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2123.JPG

Friday: The crowd at the booth becomes truly massive. People are laughing, having fun, and the enthusiasm grows and grows. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2125.JPG

After wrapping up the day on Friday, I return to the hotel and take off my wings. Gotta race out and grab some food while we have the chance! https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2127.JPG

I'll post up more photos when I can, but need to race out the door right now. I'll edit this post to show off more soon as I'm able.

First edit of this post begins here, March 9th, 12:40pm EDT

Saturday Morning: In true #LegitBiz fashion from my twitch steam, I start out the day at breakfast with a rather epic waffle: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2146.JPG

Saturday Morning, immediately after doors open: Crowd begins immediately. In the foreground, we have a real pilot stop by and take a crack at the game. This gentleman was a true ace and punched through both the basic and the advanced combat demos we had brought with us. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2147.JPG

Saturday afternoon around 2pm: The crowd grows and grows all day. In the front, we're behind two players enjoying Elite on the Rift. On the other side, we can see the front of the line, and Ambassadors Ryan & Dr Wookie helping their players. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2153.JPG

Saturday afternoon: Twitch stops by to experience Elite: Dangerous on the Rift! https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2154.JPG

Saturday afternoon: These sharp-dressed fellows stop by and have a turn on the rift. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2158.JPG

Saturday just before 5pm: Pardon the amateur nature of the vid, but here's a quick pan of the queue & crowd around the booth. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2161.MOV

Saturday night: Out for a final dinner with the crew: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80086629/PICS/Rezri_ED_PAXEast-Pics/IMG_2167.JPG

Thanks again to Frontier and all the attendees. This was so much fun, and I'll never forget the experience. :)

Thanks for post Rezri.

This guy, ladies and gentleman... This guy. Rezri was the model example of how an ambassador should be: entertaining, polite, hard-working, personable, outgoing, friendly and an absolute pleasure to be around. I can't wait to meet Jay (Rezri) again, whether that's in a work situation or not.

------ Brian ------

image.jpg

Brian is the type of person you can always count on to keep you calm in stressful situations... Because he's so chilled out himself.

'What's that? The world is ending? Oh that's cool, I'll just finish up these last few Oculus Rift demos then I'll grab a water.' Cool doesn't quite cut it when describing Brian, and when that calm guy creeps out of his shell, he's amiable, kind and hilarious.

---- Ryan -----

image.jpg

'Would you rather see a ghost or eat some toast' is one of the many personal jokes that Ryan shared with us, and it's also a warning to 'swipe left' if you see him on Tinder (we all took great joy in trying to find him a date in Boston... Other apps are available).

Ryan, like the other three ambassadors we had on this trip, was another brilliant hard-working, down-to-earth, fun-loving chap, who reminded me a bit of me... But maybe that's to do with the fact we're similar height (both a bit short...), and proof that good things come In small packages!

----- Dr Wookie ------

Does Chewie get a medal at the end of A New Hope? Regardless, Robin deserves a medal for his work at E3 and now PAXEast. One of the most passionate speakers on the subject of Elite: Dangerous, Robin (official title Dr Wookie to you and I), is one of the most interesting, smart and passionate people Ive had the pleasure of meeting.

Thank you PAXEast ambassadors. Thank you very much indeed.

Thanks for the kind words and more pics, Ed. Looking forward to meeting up again, if able. :)

Us short guys gotta stick together Ed. I had a blast this past weekend, shook many hands and helped what felt like thousands of potential new commanders take a seat for their first time in the cockpit of a Sidewinder. I want to give a huge shout out to all the people that waited in line to experience this game, EVERYONE left the cockpit with a smile on their face whether they were victorious in the combat mission or not. I even saw many people coming back, waiting in line again just to experience the immersion that the DK2 provides! What a ride!

P.S. Plz swipe right for some great one liners.

A sincere thanks for the kind words, Ed; it was my pleasure - I'm sure I can say this on behalf of all the ambassadors. You Jessie, and Ali couldn't have been better to us.

The entire experience of the Pax atmosphere, representing such a great game, meeting the fans, and our nightly outings is definitely one of the more memorable times I've ever had. It was fun seeing the reactions when I mentioned the size of the galaxy and the 160,000 accurately mapped stars on a 1:1 scale. So many just stared in space in a moment of bewilderment as a smile slowly crept up their face.

Beyond just this, it was interesting to explain the game to people because it actually made me reflect on how many functions are actually implemented. The demonstration consisted of a minute or so of my quick summary of the game, followed by the basic controls, and then the basic combat tutorial (we gave about 5 minutes to play). Often times, I felt my demonstration wasn't doing Elite any justice simple because it was barely even scratching the surface. For those who defeated the sidewinder in a couple minutes, I restarted the tutorial and quickly glossed over the more advanced functions, showing them the power management system (SYS, ENG, WEP), the landing gear and cargo scoop, silent running, and the function of both side panels. In addition to this (for the users not on the rift) I showed them the headlook so they could see the cockpit in high fidelity. Being able to explain more was very fulfilling (if only there was enough time for everyone). As if everything before the sidewinder wasn't enough, I would say most were blown away after the "extended demo". And that STILL was barely touching on the depth of the game. Often times at the end I would say "If you're interested in what you see, there's a LOT more depth to the game than I could ever explain in five minutes so be sure to do some research and check it out." I think this is taken for granted sometimes by those of us who've been playing for a while.

It was wonderful seeing people stand in line for an hour to an hour and a half to play the game. Not only that, but even moroso, the players who CAME BACK to wait again, because they couldn't get enough. There were several times where I saw the same people return - sometimes in the same day. With all there is to see and do at Pax, that truly means sometimes. One kid even told me "there's nothing else to do". How awesome that of all the things at Pax, he wasn't interested in anything except Elite. There were so many great interactions and reactions with the fans (or soon to become) that were immensely rewarding.

So that being said it was an awesomely enjoyable role as ambassador, and I'd like to throw a huge thank you out there once to again to Frontier and everyone involved for not only the opportunity to take part, but for everything they've done with this amazing game we all love. In the words of Edward, "Cheers!"

younger5th, you're right about how we barely scratch the surface of the game in the demo.

I wonder if, at future expos, there could be a larger TV for all to see with a Twitch streamer playing the game. Or an extended walk-through from the basics to more advanced flight, including docking, trading, etc. that could replay through the day? Sure, we'd all wind up having everything memorized by the end of the expo, but the potential players could see how much more is available.

When I was on the Rift stations at PAX South, I had the queue behind me, and I would turn to them every 10 minutes or so (new people) and tell them that 'what they're seeing is just barely scratching the surface of the game. There's different careers you can choose and switch between when you want to, etc, talked about the Milky Way, the size and scope, that the game is released and available for digital download at elitedangerous.com for $60. No monthly fees. We're going to keep the servers going with ship skins and decals and merch sales. And this is just the beginning. The Devs are hard at work adding more to the game. Check out more on Twitch and YouTube!'

Cheers, Commanders! Glad y'all had a blast!

I also had a fantastic time at PAX East... it was even more intense than last year's E3! Without getting too luvvy about it, everyone was amazing. FD left me a barely functioning husk at the end, unable to do anything but the most simple tasks at the end of 3 gruelling days, but the enthusiasm from everyone who saw the game (and those that showed it off) definitely made it worthwhile. I'd do it again again in a heartbeat :p. Now I'm after Kerrash's Most Ambassadorial Ambassador crown :D.

Part of me wishes that I had a smartphone for taking photos throughout the days, but instead I only had my Ipad and DSLR (hence the lack of updates). Since I lost my dumb-phone with its 1.3 Megapixel camera. it might be for the best that I didn't have a smartphone though :p

Anyway, here are the precious few photos I took:
Here's the reason I took so few photos... constant queues of ~100 people, mostly drawn by shinies rather than knowing the game

Next to our booth, there was some kind of cosplay photo service thingy (I think)

I REALLY hope these ladies had something warm to come to PAX in, since it was usually well below freezing with snow outside

Thanks to Frontier for the opportunity to tell even more people about the game, and for feeding and watering the ambassadors (even though food after midnight was not advisable)

Oh by the way, 1.2 was basically on fire for me yesterday, I demand a refund :p
