Hardware & Technical AMD 5600x Vs 5800x

For gaming and more general pc stuff, with a little format shifting of my DVD collection, is there any compelling reason to go for the 5800 over the 5600.

Just can't see one myself. Anyone with a differing view?

If you plan on keeping your pc for many years(more than 5) then having 8 cores may mean it takes longer to become obsolete to the extent that games would struggle on it.
Other than that no, for most purposes the 5600x is more than capable of running everything.

5800X boosts a little higher, will transcode with x265 considerably faster, and the extra cores are somewhat relevant for some games.

The issue is the price differential, which is fairly large, and if you're sure you'd use the extra cores on the 5800X, you'd probably be better off with a 5900X, which boosts even higher and has an even larger advantage in cores (vs the 5800X) than the 5800X has over the 5600X, for proportionally less of an increase in price.

I have a 5800X in my multipurpose gaming setup only because the 5900X wasn't readily available when I built it, but if I was on a tighter budget, I'd probably have gone for a 5600X for a pure gaming setup.

Cheers. That more or less codifies my thinking, and while I can stretch to the 2800, I just don't have the spare cash for the 5900 (let alone the 5950). Think I'll stick to the 5600

The 5600x is a really good choice for gaming and general PC stuff - as you put it. The money you save over the 5800 could go towards other PC parts.

I have just upgraded to a B550 motherboard and 5600x and I can tell you this is a very powerful CPU - you can run it stock or tweak Core Optimizer and PBO and it will run up to 4850mhz. It will also be easier to cool than a 5800, but I recommend getting an inexpensive aftermarket cooler, like a CoolerMaster or Be Quiet.

Except the 5950 these 5000 series are easy to cool. I have the 5800x and temp are really good (using a noctua air cooler)
