Personally I'll wait until shortly before Elite releases to upgrade my graphics card. Cards that are expensive now will probably be cheaper by then. I can probably run it well on my current rig, but it's nice to be sure, and I'll probably need to upgrade for other games like Arkham Knight anyway if I want to play in high settings.

I don't see why not. There has been mention of people on laptops with slower processors and the on processor HD4000 graphics being OK. This should be better than that. As long as you are happy knocking down details or resolution if needed. The advantage of these processors is you can get a cheap AMD graphics card to crossfire the built-in graphics with if you need to or find more money later.

The trouble is we don't know if you'll need higher specs than you do at the moment because they'll be more to see in the final game or it'll be optimised and you'll get better performance than you do at the moment.

So do you think that i can play Elite and then , later when necessary, add on a powerful graphic card maintaining the same CPU ?

Quite frankly, I ran ED through the Alpha phase with my AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition Quad-core, XFX Radeon HD 4890 1 GB GDDR5 Video Card, and 8 gig of 1600speed Corsair RAM with no problem. I kept graphic settings on high and got 15-20fps inside the station and 30 most everywhere else.

I'm now running an AMD A10-7850K Kaveri 3.7GHz, XFX R9 270X 2gig video card, and 8 gig of Corsair RAM @2133 and getting 60+fps, all on high. (This same rig is giving me 80-130fps in Battlefield 4.)

Also, I just finished a computer build for a friend of mine who plays Neverwinter. To save money, we skipped the video card and just ran the AMD A10-7850K Kaveri 3.7GHz APU. I got the report back from him today that it's "absolutely amazing".

I logged in before handing it off to him and it was definitely nice and smooth. I didn't run any benchmarking (since it's "just" Neverwinter).

The good thing with that APU is that if you decide later to up the graphics ability, just cough up some dough for a video card. One that will certainly have gone down in price by later this year.

Not stupid at all, the latest APUs are quite strong compared to say a PC built 5 years ago.
The FM2 socket is on its way out so grab a bargain and remain locked in or look for a FM2 chip and FM2+ board to give you Apu upgrade options next year.

So.. A10 7700K £110
Asus ***BM-A/USB3 £50
8GB of your favourite memory £50
Funky Micro ATX case - (i'm looking a Fractal Design one) £60
be-quiet 450W PSU - £45
Nice SSD like a 128GB Sandisk - £50
1TB drive = £40 po 2TB for £60ish

If you had a spare OS lying around and a console type controller, this would be just the job hooked up to the tv as a media server / light gaming machine? :)

hmm

There is a good reason why i voted for "absolutely not". My friend has got the same APU A10-5800K and it was crawling in "factions" at about 7fps. In empty space it was ok above 30fps. I hope it will work better for you

Ty Robbie, it's a very intersting post, i am going to check the A10 7700 and 7800 as Erik mentioned too.
The most important thing is that the APU will be good also with a later upgraded graphic video card that i will add in the future.

and about the controller i have a wonderful thrustmaster that just gave me a lot of joy in the past, i am curious to see if i can set it also for this game.

duel mode

The latest AMD APUs will run in duel mode (a bit like crossfire) if paired with a AMD GPU. So you could try it and if runs like a sack of spanners you could plonk in a budget AMD card like a R7 265 or higher. So at least the APU wasn't a waste of money and will boost what a dedicated card can do (if the APU doesn't cut it).

PCper.com have done tests with that kind of setup so worth a look.

I'm not using an APU but have a R9 270x and it's plenty good enough for Elite so far.

I'm curious. Does he also have a video card installed, or is he only using the APU for graphics?

And how does it perform in other games or benchmarking?

I am running an a8-7600 and had it dualed up with an r7 250x. I was getting pretty poor performance so I switched it to just run on the graphics card. HUGE improvement. I have no idea why this would be but I'm going to try the other way as well, just the apu with no graphics card.

On medium settings, I was getting +-30 fps (12 during frameshift animation!) in dual graphics, 50-60 fps (35+ frameshift) with just the card....

I have the exact APU.
It was almost enough to run 1080p on high. Then I got gtx 750ti and could run everything on high.

But if you wanna hook up an oculus you will need GTX 970 or 980, which I have now :)

Your VGA should be fine, but the Quad-Core CPU its just not enough for gaming nowadays.

I run this game on High Settings using a pretty old VGA HD5870(from 2009), but my CPU is a Six-Core AMD6300.

hmm runs fine on my a8 6600k, r7 250. 1600x900 is my native though so not 1080.

edit: just checked its running at a solid 30 for me textures high shadows medium, everything else pretty much on medium. then again if i change everything to high it still stays at 30 so who knows.

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/AMD-A8-6600K-vs-AMD-A10-5800K pretty much the same

might want a dedicated gpu though, because if you have less than 8gb of ram, using the integrated gpu uses your system ram.

Today i had this strange idea...
the most cheapest solution to play elite dangerous... and i found this:
AMD - APU A10-5800K (Trinity) quad core Radeon HD 7660D included
could be enough to run Elite Dangerous without necessary buying a powerful dedicated graphic card ?
or is it a stupid idea ?
The 7660D is 10% faster than the minimum spec of 8800GT so will happily run ED, probably 900P at max settings, or 1080P at medium/low - anti-aliasing disabled of course.

That's not strictly true. For 4K gaming yes a dual-core CPU will bottleneck the GPU. However for 1080P at max w/AA even a Triple Core CPU (like my Phenom X3) will help GPUs (like my SLI'd 570s) push past 60FPS, as clearly shown by gaming benchmarks: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/pentium-g3258-overclocking-performance,review-32974-5.html
Fast quad-cores, 3.5GHz+, are more than enough for today's games.
