Hardware & Technical AMD Radeon R9 280 and a 144Hz Monitor

I've been thinking of upgrading my monitor to the ASUS VG248QE, but I saw a video recently that said only high-end GPUs will be able to produce images fast enough for these 144Hz refresh rate monitors. Will my R9 280 (not the 280x) be able to make use of a high refresh rate monitor? Anyone else have a similar setup, and can comment on the effectiveness?

Thanks in advance.

I doubt that you are going to feel the difference between 60 and 140 frames per second in the game. I'd say that higher monitor fresh rate is more a marketing trick than a necessity. The only possible benefit is that basically you can choose the refresh rate that would be equal to the frames per second you get in the game. However, if you use VSYNC than the max refresh rate of the monitor is not that important. The only advantage that I see is that 144Hz would have more divisors, and hence allow more flexibility with VSYNC as basically it will limit the frame rate to 144, 72, 48... frames per second.

High-end GPUs will allow you to achieve a larger frame rate using VSYNC for sure.

Ah ok, thanks for shedding some light. It seems a lot of monitors are being marketed on these obtuse performance ratings like refresh rate, IPS, etc.

I do eventually want a better monitor, the one i'm using now was originally intended for my Raspberry Pi B+ and has a couple of dead pixels along with crappy viewing angles. But however I think I need to figure out how to remove my stock CPU cooler and install that Hyper 212 Evo I got for christmas so I can do some overclocking... Anyways thanks for the reply!
