Hardware & Technical AMD RDNA 2 Microsoft DirectX Raytracing (DXR) Demo

It's a techdemo. Art direction is a subjective matter, but there are a lot of reflections that are clearly not cube maps, so the hardware accelerated raytracing is clearly working. Resolution is low and there doesn't seem to be much depth with regard to the number of bounces. Still, it's probably console hardware running this.

As somebody who recently bought RTX2080Ti (not for RTX, I just needed the power) and has seen how useless (however pretty) the nVidia RTX is in practicality, I can only say "Good job AMD". If they're going to pull off ray-tracing that just works without massive performance costs, even if it's less accurate, they're going to break the bank.
nVidia was right about one thing - ray-tracing is the future of lighting and reflection in games. In theory it should make devs' lives easier and look good. But you can't sacrifice performance. That is true for any industry (like cars for example). People love new features, but won't sacrifice old comforts. That's why EVs won't really take off yet and that's why RTX failed - it's an extra work for the devs (which is the exact opposite of what it should be) and it represents performance sacrifices for users.

So yeah, I like this.
 
RTX is essentially just NVIDIA's take on DXR and RTX hardware can be used to accelerate DXR.

It's not really going to reduce work for developers...engines will need to integrate these features and a lot of stuff will still need to be hand-tuned to achieve the desired effects within a given performance budget.

Hopefully, what this will do is make raytracing effects more accessable by removing NVIDIA's current monopoly on it's hardware acceleration.
