AMD release Liquid VR

AMD began working on Liquid VR after meeting with Oculus Rift HMD creator Oculus VR 14 months ago. The aim of the kit is to make VR development accessible and combat issues such as simulation sickness. ”You can plug an Oculus Rift into a computer and start 3D rendering directly to the headset, even without Oculus’ SDK,” the company noted during a presentation. The first version of the SDK includes an affinity multi gpu – one GPU per eye rendered simultaneously, avoiding any duplication. The SDK is also said to massively reduced latency and should eliminate judder. It aims to deliver a direct to display seamless plug and play VR experience for any VR headset and includes shaders that minimise stuttering

This sounds interesting, but I suspect that it will not be incorporated in the engine for some time. I can see a merge ahead (DX12, AMD's Liquid, new Glide, NVIDIA forthcoming solution, etc) but none of it is backward compatible with the current code and will probably result (as always) in support to the lowest common denominator (i.e DX12). So none of this tech will really see the light of day until Windows 10 and then Cobra will need to be updated.

Perhaps by the second expansion we might see some of it. :)

Looks a bit like Mantle except for VR.

How did they know there were gonna be mutliple HMD vendors? ;)

Engadget: When asked about whether or not AMD is also working with HTC and Valve on the HTC Vive headset, AMD reps hilariously clammed up and asked whether or not they could talk about that yet. Sounds like the answer is yes!

Toms has most of the slides and a decent overview - http://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-liquidvr-virtual-reality,28682.html

Just wanted to add this in about how LiquidVR was added into Serious Sam VR and the results were spectacular with very good performance and Frametimes http://gpuopen.com/implementing-liquidvr-affinity-multigpu-in-serious-samvr/ . I know FDEV are very busy but would love to see them add this in and/or gameworks VR for Nvidia, it means folks could enjoy the game at its best in VR with two cheaper GPU's instead of having to spend crazy money on a single high end card.

Heres the video:
