Hardware & Technical AMD Zen may provide competition to Intel.

I've been following the development of AMD's Zen series of CPUs for the last wee while. It would seem that their predictions of significant IPC improvements (over their previous offerings) have cone to pass.

Apparently, an 8-core Zen provides about double the CPU capability of the FX-8350 and may be directly competitive with the Intel i7-5960X (article here: http://wccftech.com/amd-zen-cpu-performance-double-fx-8350/).

Whether thinking of buying AMD or not, some measure of competition in the CPU market should provide some price competitiveness for consumers.

That was a good read. I do hope they are directly competitive to Intel's higher end chips, as you say it only increases competition which then benefits customers. Look forward to seeing some hands-on benchmarks later this year.
Always liked AMD's stuff because of what they include on their chips as opposed to Intel and how they made features only available on certain chips AES-NI, VT-D, ECC etc.

If Zen is as good as I hope it is, I'll be replacing my FX-8350 / AM3+ MOBO / DDR3 with an 8-core Zen / AM4 MOBO / DDR4 later in the year.

I still need to decide what GPU to replace my R9 280X with - waiting to see what Polaris 10 is capable of - rumour has it that the R9 480X is equivalent to an OC R9 390X and uses less power. That'd do me nicely....

Amen to that, in the PC space the last time I considered AMD a viable alternative to Intel was when the K6 was launched.

I really do hope that ZEN brings them back in to the CPU game.

I saw the wccf article elsewhere, and was thinking then, how much did AMD claim, vs what is wccf interpretation? The AMD slides I don't think say as much as wccf are saying. Basically, I'm still waiting for hard numbers before I get my hopes up too high.

Indeed. However, given that Intel have put together a 10-core i7 (http://wccftech.com/intel-broadwell-e-core-i7-6950x-price/), I think that Intel are concerned that Zen is going to be competitive and have taken steps to remain top of the heap.... That's good enough for me (although hard numbers would be much better than speculation, I agree).

It is going to be an interesting ride. There will no doubt be the usual hardware sites with early samples and benchmark results on official launch, but I still rate myself as likely to get one to play with regardless. Now if they just hurry up and launch it... personally I'm more interested in the CPU side than GPU. Can't get enough CPU power.
