Newcomer / Intro ammo for my multi cannons

ok this may be a really stupid question, but I've just bought my first multi-cannons and gone to the munitions tab to buy some ammo but the guns are always red and unselectable. Is this because I can only buy ammo from certain stations or am I doing something wrong?

You can't buy ammo if they are already full, guns are sold loaded. Yes, I know, it's a dangerous practice and probably should be stopped, but it beats buying guns, going out there and then suddenly finding that you can't shoot because you forgot they needed ammo.

Also, yes, I think some stations don't allow you to rearm / refuel / repair. You can find out from looking at the System Map and selecting the station, you don't need to dock to find out.
