An Earth-Like World

Some funny replies :)

I guess I was expecting the description of Earth to say something more like - The birthplace of humanity. Has endured for millions of years... and then give a short description of its current condition. Not Earth is Earth-Like - lol

They could have also used "Habitable World" to describe Earth-Like worlds. I know its not a big deal. I just thought it was funny :)

Are you sure? I mean, is that in Lore somewhere? I only ask because things could have changed in the next 1300 years, and UTC/Zulu time may not be the same in 3300 :)

Brits always seem to think they're the center of the universe :)

We don't "think" we are the centre of the universe. We know we are. It's a function of T.

I could describe things in many ways, but for example, if I were to say "This apple is very apple-like" or " That dog is very dog-like" Wouldn't that be stating the obvious?

It (Earth) belongs to a set of planets called ''Earth-likes'' which are defined by having similar characteristics to Earth (or to put it exactly: they are human-habitable outdoor worlds).
It's not like saying ''That apple is very apple-like'', but more like saying ''That apple, unsurprisingly, is part of a plant belonging to the malus genus, like all other apples, but unlike some different flowering plants, like the Pear tree.''

My sixth-form physics teacher used to keep the centre of the universe in a small wooden box in the classroom. It was as good as any other place.

And yeah, Earth is Earth-like, and "terrestrial" usually means "small rocky planet" in astrophysics, so that'd be out.
It wouldn't have killed them to put in an override to catch the special case of Earth, but it's not exactly super-important top priority.

An Earth, is an earth is an earth is an earth...

Granted. Year 3,300 things have changed dramatically. However, if history is of any help, chances are that Earth won't be classified as an Earth-Like Planet. If we are to create a category for the exo planets that resemble our own, and based that category on that fact alone, then Earth sits at the center and as the model per-se of such category. Then, Earth is not an Earth-Like world. Earth is Earth, and all others are like Earth, at most.

Albeit a tad geocentric, this classification speaks to the need of humankind to travel and conquer other worlds. For that effect, it answers the question, "can we live there?"

If we were to, on the other hand, be totally objective, scientific about the classification of our planet, then we would need to identify all that is similar in them, and create the category after a series of traits of which Earth has them all. Just as we classify our Sun as a G Main Sequence Star. We don't call other stars, Sol-Like. Quite the way around: Sol belongs to G stars group. In that case, the category is not named after something, and nothing sits at the center of it.

To wrap it up, according to ED Universe, Earth should be Earth among Earth-like planets. Not Earth-Like.

And it should be something else if they adopt another classification of planets. But even in the year 3,300, with a foreseeable urgency of moving or spread out in the universe, I think the former category would be more common but for the sake of all that's living, they'll still call it and classify as Earth!

In the game - as many others have pointed out already - "Earth-like" is a technical term for a world where one can walk around without an environment suit. So, in principle, if, say, the Empire dropped a few dozen cobalt-bomb seeded asteroids on the planet the result would be Earth no longer being "Earth-like."

Earth the planet is not synonymous with the term Earth-like and, in this game, the description is not redundant.
