Newcomer / Intro An expensive lesson

Recently switched to Open Play, and just had my first run in with a player pirate. He interdicted me, and in a very civilized tone ordered me to heave to and await further instruction. Being a bit too new for my own good, I start running. Turns out the Type-6 has nothing on a well equipped Asp, and you can see where this is going. He graciously gave me two more warnings before tearing my thrusters apart, and that there is a game over. I tossed him a few tons of palladium for his trouble before realizing there was no way to repair my thrusters in space. Luckily, I had more than enough to cover full insurance and a new full load of cargo, so I switched to solo mode to cool off for a bit.

Thinking about it, I'm not mad. This played out predictably and there were many chances to not lose so much cargo. There is one thing that bothers me, though.

I was recording at the time, and reviewing the footage, I wasn't given any opportunity to beat the actual interdiction. The interdiction started, the escape vector bounced wildly off screen for a total of two seconds, and then the red bar filled to maximum. Is there anything I can equip to improve my chances of beating interdiction? Was this a glitch or is that how A-rated FSD interdictors work?

And to all you other newbies out there, a hollow marker on your radar denotes a human player. Watch your step! ^_^

I have had the same predicament as you last night. When I was interdicted, the red bar was already almost full. Set throttle to zero submitting to the interdiction. The human pirate player gave the ultimatum but I tried to run. I was just carrying Coltan. He blew me up when I was just about to jettison the Coltan - 5 tons only.

Throttle zero is a submission? Does that mean I wouldn't take frame damage?

Yes, when you are interdicted and you know that you can't beat it (escape vector) by filling the light blue bar up, it's better to submit to it. You take less/no damage. And your FSD cools down faster.

Interesting. I can see why people advise Cobra players to submit and then boost, leveraging the Mark III's speed to save damage and potential exposure time.

Still, in this particular encounter, the interdiction happened so fast that I wouldn't have had the time to slow to observation speed for the submission. Still wondering if the uncounterable, two-second interdiction is a glitch or intentional and what ship's system I can upgrade to improve my chances.

You need to hold bearing on the escape vector more precisely and for a greater amount of time than they can hold bearing on their interdiction target (you) precisely for given time.

Basically thrusters let you gain distance from them, and may aid your maneuverability to allow for sharper turns into the EV. Having a lower weight probably helps too, but I'm not sure if these factor into SC as much...
That said, more thrust means faster escape. Even if you've got it pipped on the EV, if your thrust is low (or lower than theirs maybe, given their bearing on you) then you may still lose bars to the interdicter.

You basically just need to play the mini-game as best as possible and hope that they're not as good or better at doing the same thing as you're trying to, if you want to escape.
