Hello fellow CMDRs,
This is my first time posting on the forums, and I didn't see anything too similar to this here already, so I'll throw this idea out there. My friends and I have had trouble easily coordinating our actions as a group, and feel that the current wing system could benefit from a few more features. What if there was a "Formation" option for a wing to use for normal, supercruise, and inter-system jump flight? For instance, if my wing and I wanted to fly around our current system, but would rather not have to hunt each other down when we hit supercruise, this Formation option would provide the ability to travel as more of a cohesive unit.
In Formation mode, the secondary ships would move to a position in the formation (according to whichever formation layout was chosen by the wing) and would move in tandem with the primary ship in normal flight and in supercruise for as long as they left the formation system active. Also, rather than waiting for detection of a FSD jump, the supercruise and inter-system jumps would be initialized at the same time as the leader when in Formation mode.
This mode wouldn't replace the current wing system, but could supplement it for players that want to move around as a more of a unit. This way, worrying about coordinating approaches to stations or points of interest would no longer be an issue. Formations would still be interdicted as a unit, and would have to communicate about fuel consumption so that no member runs out of fuel mid-flight. Jumps would be limited to the jump range of the formation member with the least range to ensure everybody can make it to the destination. Weapons hardpoints would need to be disabled while in formation to prevent the creation of collective superships. (although now that I think about it, that could be fun.)
I feel like this would streamline group play so that less time would be spent looking for wing members and more time could be spent actually participating in whatever the wing wanted to do. Any feedback on this idea would be great. I look forward to hearing what you guys think of it.
