Docking computer…
No longer a separate module make it part of every ship that can be on or off as desired. Frees up a slot.


Make some of the smaller ‘outposts’ those mainly on the edge not have ‘auto dock’ facilities, manual docking only with a cute “Auto dock is unavailable at this station” message.


Larger ships that cannot dock at small or medium pads are unable to trade with ‘outposts’ but most of the larger ships have fighter craft hangers.
Create small cargo vessels that can be stored in the hanger so that CMDRs can choose either a fighter craft or a cargo/passenger vessel.


The cargo vessel can carry say 32t/64t maximum and can transport cargo to the smaller pads while the main ship stays within 5km of the station.
The main ship cannot refuel, re-equip or access the shipyard but can pick up missions that are within cargo capacity, trade, etc.

I could see this, but make it something you dont have right away. For example, I think people should know how to drive a car, before hitting the ole autopilot, as some vehicles seem to offer now. In the same way, you should know how to land your space slug. After a set number of landings, or maybe time with a ship, the option presents itself.

I like that cargo ship idea. This could be used for mining too? Call them SLU's. Ship Launched Utility vehicles.

I think people need to be punished for using docking computers. ;)

That was how it's was supposed to work. If you read the facilities for a station on the system map you can still see "docking" as a function. For some reason they decided not to go with it.
