An idea to discuss: a dedicated zone for PVP in full sized ships?

I have already posted this as a detailed suggestion in the suggestions and feedback forum:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...d-ships-set-in-CQC-maps?p=4824793#post4824793

But I think it would be better discussed here, so to seed the conversation I'm posting what is basically a TL:DR from the other more detailed post for you guys to go to town with. The basic premise of the suggestion is arising from the recent combat logging debates, looking at the root cause of it there is a need certain players have for more challenging combat than PVE can offer them and at the opposite end of the spectrum there are PVE guys who don't want to or are unable to compete with skilled PVP pilots. As such I'm suggesting the addition of a dedicated PVP mode in full sized ships is that a new playmode / special PG be made to allow players to take their game ships in to the CQC maps, the CQC maps would have jumpgates added to them to facilitate travel between maps, creating its own little mini universe, which I've called the Icarus Zone. I've named it such as a nod to the the Icarus Cup, an FD proposed main game PVP tournament: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/275595-Icarus-Cup-Information-and-Signup

In this little pocket parallel universe the rules of engagement are next to nonexistant, but combat logging is severely punished. It would be expected if you are in the Icarus Zone, you are looking looking for a fight, but you are there to fight for fun so rebuys would be subsidised, but combat logging would face severe punishment, such as if you log out / restart / disconnect mid fight in the Icarus Zone the ship ship you were flying at the time is gone, no insurance, no rebuy gone deleted bye bye'd. To make it worth while you could add rewards otherwise unobtainable or at the very least very difficult to get, such as:

  • reward kills with vouchers to cash in for materials/data/engineering commodoties of your choice
  • naval rank progression, for example if you fly a fed gunship in the Icarus Zone and as you show combat prowess the navy adds rank progression for your commander in the main game
  • certain engineers could add reputation based on your victories in the Icarus Zone
  • certain engineers might only deal with guys who are good in the Icarus Zone
  • to keep it lively there would be a minimum 100k(?) prize money put on your head when you enter the zone then
    • as you kill other players you collect their prize money as credits added tto your commander account
    • each kill adds another 100k prize money on to the price on your head (6 kills = starting 100K + 6*100k addition = 700K on your head)
    • or you could add the victims prize money to the winners prize money (discuss)
    • when you get killed your prize money resets to 100k
    • tiers of prize money earned unlock rewards bonuses - like materials / rank progression / engineers unlock and rep gains

I'd like to hear your opinions and suggestions on this idea particularly what you think would be needed to make it a good thing to add, great fun, rewarding, a mecca for hard core PVP guys to go to and leave PVE carebears alone, a challenging but rewarding but not intimidating place for PVE guys to go to learn and become better pilots?

Maybe to achieve that last point we need a trainee mode, where a rookie can select a setting marking them as a trainee and can go into the zone, facing no rebuy costs, no prize rewards (creditss/mats/rep/etc...) will be collected by them but if they lose a fight the victor still gets a reward.

Its all yours now, but please bare in mind that I'd really appreciate it if we can keep the chatter to this thread, and i'll edit the suggestion in suggestions and feedback based on what is said in here :)

I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear enough, when I say "full sized ships" I'm am meaning actual ships, not just the little snub fighters (Federal F63 Condor, Imperial GU97, Lakon Taipan) used in CQC. So it'd be like CQC with players actual ships rather than being limited to just the ship launched fighters? It is my intention that players of this new mode can fly anything in the Icarus Zone that they own in the main game.

There is already a dedicated PvP zone, its anywhere outside of a stations, platform or ports no fire zone.

In all seriousness, I really don't understand why CQC or a variation of it where you fight in what you fly was never incorporated into the main game. Same as dedicated planets with SRV race courses, canyon courses for ship races etc. Even places for spectators to bring commodities and place bets and then watch the events... A real missed opportunity imo.

I guess for networking, matchmaking, containment reasons?

i would like to see CQC expanded upon, that is for sure... so long as any new assets made for it are slurped into the main game.

as for death match arenas in the core game... it could work, so long as these events were made clear with warning to those who are around the area.

I think something like this would be great. A place to go with your heavily armed combat ship where you know you're going to encounter more people the same. No hoping that you encounter someone, If you go there you know you'll be able to find a decent fight.

That is a fair point, so maybe not lock it, but make it easier to gain via the icarus zone, how about scoring 1 kill in the icarus zone = 5T of rare goods for an engineers unlock?

As long as PvP isn't mandatory in order to access content (or unreasonably favoured to the point of taking a hundred times as much effort in PvE), I'm not bothered by players being rewarded for taking the huge risk of a rebuy that going there would involve.

It doesn't personally affect me since I likely wouldn't take part. But it might be a good idea to make sure the reward for killing players who have more kills themselves scales aggressively enough that farming easy kills on inexperienced players is massively inferior to seeking fewer kills on the top players. Otherwise it could be prone to experienced players in their meta FDLs mutually ignoring each other and dogpiling the players who have come to learn.

Cool - i'm glad you like my revised tweak on Icarus Zone progressing engineers / other stuff.

I must admit I am really and pleasantly surprised this thread hasn't been flame grilled by the "git gud" contingent.
