An idiots guide to the heat sink launcher

Have done the emergency stop when too close to the star thingy a few times when exploring and wondering whether a heat sink is the way to go when i head off into the unknown.mUnfortunately i cant find a lot of info about them and what there is doesnt seem to be up to gate.

So could someone please let me know the basics ie where you get them, how you equip them, how do you use them and are they any good? Or point me towards some info

Thank you commanders...

You can buy them at most stations, they don't need to be assigned to a fire group, just set a key binding in the controls menu.

They only work in normal space, dump a heat sink when you need to reduce heat levels whilst jumping away from a star, or if silent running you can use them to keep the ship cold and stay silent longer (turn off modules to assist keeping the ship cool)

Heat sinks are vital when exploring, has saved my bacon quite a few times when near Supergiants.

You equip on utility slot and either use by adding to firegroup or assigning a hotkey.
They only work in normal space so aren't any good if you leave yourself cooking whilst fuel scooping!

Edit -nnjd :p

i find them handy when im running away after i submit to an interdiction when trading, sometimes i'll start to overheat while my FSD is charging up and im chain boosting to keep my distance.. popping a heat sink helps keep the temperature in the green.

I use mine to get rid of the heat build up in my Python's hull from the 3 large beam laser's I deploy. After 2 or 3 full discharges of the weapons capacitor the ship is as hot as a firecracker, so I have the weapons release button on the hotas throttle assigned to release a heatsink......cool running.

thanks for that guys, i have found one and installed it. it asked me to assign it to a fire group but i didnt. so would that be the standard V key then? so you kind of fire it then and it takes the heat from your ship... and does it only 'fire' so many times before it has to be replenished?

I've never used one either - do they dump whatever heat you have (taking you to 0) or do they take time to "charge up" with your heat?

You need to buy ammo for it, but it's very cheap. I don't bother with a fire group, just use V.

The dump is almost instant and virtually down to zero, then it starts climbing again.

Are you sure about "Work only in normal space" ?
I play ED on PS4, and I was in super cruise at minimum speed with my Dolphin, scanning a orange star, as usual, and the heat sink launched alone.
I do not understand, the temperature in my ship wasn't to hot (40°c/104° Farenheit)

When the quote you are replying to was written you couldn't use them in SC. It has been changed since then, so you are both correct.

;).

you are aware that you can hit the throttle-zero key/button as soon as the hyperjump timer starts - and you will not accelerate towards the exit star :D

Whoa, did not notice the age of this thread when I replied!

@fced Feel free to make a new thread if there isn't a recent one on the subject you're asking about. Mods tend to close threads like this as necro if they get bumped.

I was actually hoping to see an idiot's guide in here so I could git gud at using heat sinks as an offensive weapon. Like a hot puck to the face or something. Oh well.
