An Ill-Fated Trip to the Glorious Nebula

I've recently started enjoying tourist passenger missions. I know that they might be seen as a cheap way to gain exploration rank, but I've really enjoyed seeing the sights myself. Recently, I decided to take the long-range "famous explorer" missions due to the possibility of seeing more on the way. (The official destination of my last mission was a bit bland, and I forced my passengers to visit several other sites on the way back.)

Anyway, I just took on some passengers for a trip to the "Glorious Nebula" at HEN 2-23. Didn't seem too bad---8000 light years. My first mistake was showing the passengers the large passenger berth. They moved right in before I could send them into the smaller berth that was more their size. Said they liked the extra space.

My next mistake: didn't check the altitude and surrounding stars, or lack thereof, at the destination. Panic slowly set in as I zoomed out and out, looking for a route, any route.

I felt reassured after finding Dante Argas' route for a 40.33 ly jump range ship. I knew my Type 6 explorer could do that after outfitting for exploration.

As I fit lighter and lighter modules, the realization dawned on me that that big passenger compartment was weighing me down! I couldn't convince the passengers to relocate, but in the end, they were willing to sign a release to fly shieldless, boostless, SRV-less, half-size fuel tank, with only the bare minimum power to run the fuel scoop and drives. Crazy, but I got back up to a 41 light year jump range.

Having said all that, I've got 10 grade-3 jump boosts, 20 grade-2 boosts, about the same grade-1 and a (thankfully) massless AFMU for the neutron jumps. Should be enough for the end route itself. I guess my question is whether anyone knows anything between the bubble and the start of the route at Wregeia WE-X d2-0 that is likely to give me any problems. (Besides all the problems I might make for myself.) It seems like it might be a good adventure, with the added excitement of some pressure not to screw up.

My only recommendation is to at least double the number of FSD injections before you head out because you don't have an SRV. Also take into account the return journey too.

Also, regarding tourist missions, it's not a cheap way or anything like that. It's the way you like to play and that's what matters. Have fun.

I got caught by this one as well, but I only realised the problem when i was almost there. I think my range was just about 40 but can't swear to it.

I'll have a dig through EDD and see what my route was. I know it involved a lot of jumping on fumes, J3 and neutron jumps. Slightly scary but fun :D

Here you go;

Start Wregeia WE-X d2-0 36.34
1 Wregeia SY-Y d1-0 62.56
2 Wregeia QD-Z d1-0 52.81
3 Wregeia LX-A d1-0 56.07
4 Wregeia JC-B d1-0 80.44
5 Wregeia IC-B d1-1 39.64
6 Sphueduia MG-Y d0 70.86
7 Sphueduia LL-Y d0 56.67
8 Sphueduia HF-A d0 75.86
9 Sphueduia JA-A d0 70.68
10 Hen 2-23 120.2
11 NGC 2818 Sector CQ-Y d0 52.52
12 Sphueduia JA-A d0 102.23
13 Wregeia JC-B d1-0 110.57
14 Wregeia LX-A d1-0 80.44
15 Wregeia QD-Z d1-0 56.07
16 Wregeia SY-Y d1-0 52.81
17 Wregeia WE-X d2-0 62.56

I needed 6x J2 and 7x J3, as well as a couple of neutron/White dwarf boosts.

Other than the hassle of the last few jumps in and out, it's more or less plain sailing. Although you may have to do some short distance plotting over the last 1k as the plotter may not find a long route.

I believe I took this as my first long-range passenger mission. I was flying a 35Ly AspX at the time which I thought would take me most places in space.

I got within 1000Lys before realising it was considerably past my jump range, and flew my ship into the nearest star in frustration. It was one of those Elite learning experiences that really sticks with you. :p

Thanks for the replies! I think I feel reassured. To provide additional entertainment, I'll give an update. The SRV was the last module I planned to ditch, in order to find a few more materials for jump boosts. I was used to only turning on the SRV hanger when landed, but never with such a small power supply. I thought I was fine--I won't need thrusters AND SRV hanger at the same time. After leaving the ship in the SRV, I thought about the reduced fuel tank size and decided I'd better dismiss the ship to save fuel. Went on my way, and noticed after a while that the ship was still sitting on the ground.

Hmm... I couldn't board because dismissal was in progress, and I couldn't cancel the dismissal. Then it hit me: Thrusters had to power on to lift off, and the SRV hanger was still active. After switching modules around, I hadn't decreased the priority of the SRV hanger, and there wasn't enough power for all systems! No problem, I thought, I'll just log off--I'm sure that will fix it. As I logged off, my figurative sinking feeling was joined by the actual sinking I saw as my ship (along with all the passengers, I presume!) sank into the planet's surface.

I was afraid to log back, try to recall my ship, and watch it plummet thruster-less to the ground. Fortunately, I remembered the "log in without Horizons" trick, and everything seems to be fine now. Lesson learned: Always put SRV hanger lower priority than thrusters and FSD!

Login into the non horizons version and it will place you inside your ship in orbit.
