An open letter from a Canonn member regarding Meta Alloys and plot progression

Dear Frontier

In the past couple of months there have been about a half dozen GalNet articles encouraging players to sell Meta Alloys in order to achieve some unspecified goal for an nondescript reward. Not only that, but we've had 2 CGs that involved selling MA to Obsidian Orbital. I'm going to be frank here. The first CG was an absolute kick in the pants. Absolutely NO story progression until we asked "what happened to the Meta Alloys?" in a player submitted GalNet article. The explanation you gave was "they were stolen". So not only did you keep that from us, and didnt explain until we asked, but you completely made our week of effort pointless.

We are fully aware of your efforts to prod us into fixing stations. We just don't care. We had suggested making special modules out of MA since February. If we could see that as players, why did it take so long for you to implement? Rather than saying "sorry we lost them" and giving us a second CG, nearly carbon copy of the original, you should have just given us something for the first CG. Quite a slap in the face.

The worst part is, in order to harvest Meta Alloys players are forced to mode switch to cause them to respawn. The CG was spent switching from open/solo/group and honestly, we would not have succeeded if not for that "exploit" or what ever you want to call it. When a CG (a carbon copy, same station, same goal) is only reachable through the use of an immersion breaking method, we begin to lose a bit of patience. Now we're seeing GalNet articles that continue to prod us into harvesting and selling Meta Alloys and honestly, I dont know a single Canonn member who is pleased with this. I know some guys who have sold over 1,000 MA to shut down stations. I know some guys who have done more than that for BOTH community goals.

Your track record with Meta Alloys the moment is 1 useless outcome, and 1 useful outcome. Combined with a horrible farming method, things are not looking good. Please do not use this method to advance the plot in the future. We know you want us to sell Meta Alloys to cure stations. It will happen, we will get there but you're going to have to be patient, we simply stopped caring. Either fix them now or expect this will take a while. Publishing more GalNet articles about selling MA to broken stations won't help us along, it only makes us cringe. ohsev

I'd also like to add that I have members who skipped family events over easter, as well one guy who called in sick, to help farm alloys for this CG hoping we would see some progress. I think I speak for all of us when I say we've done enough.

 That sounds a little.... ahem... sick! :D

That's why I couldn't force myself to take part on this CG and heaadad out towards the Rift instead.
Even though I have a huge interst in the UA/Barnacle story line.
I just won't play a meta game like this! :(

More Barnacles on planets.

An *explosion* of Barnacle population somewhere, so that *anyone* searching could find them; and if you land you have tens or hundreds of Barnacles at your disposal so you don't have to re-log.

That would stop us having to explain how to do the 'exploit', and allow even new players to come and join in.

Not only that: but it would be golddust for the story IMHO.

Can we please have NPCs harvest them, too?
I feel left out finding no MA to pirate,
or seeing the NPCs and especially The Anthill Mob be oblivious
to a genuine way to make loads of money.

On a sidenote, when are the non-lethal MA extractors i ordered shipped?

Wholeheartedly agree with this, I spent an excessive amount of time harvesting MAs in an immersion breaking way in the hopes of progressing the storyline and so far I don't even know if it has. But this whole "do a CG and then have nothing come of it" like the last MA CG happened before as well, we all collected millions of Evac Shelters for Palin to build his base in Maia and he got kidnapped and the base went unbuilt.
Hopefully these kinds of things can be ironed out so that the "reward" in terms of story progression fits the effort put in by those interested in said story. And hopefully a better way of farming meta alloys can be thought up because relogging is more of a chore than gameplay.

I endorse this message.

Switching game modes shouldn't be necessary to respawn MAs. They should grow back, like fruit from a tree.

If Frontier want people to engage with CGs like this, then the respawn and availability need to be increased WITHOUT having to change game mode.

I won't be collecting any more MAs for stations. I just can't bring myself to care about them any more.

Posting in that I have great sympathy for you guys, if I'd have been contributing to this CG (don't have horizons) i'd have been seriously bummed that you had to mode switch to farm them and reach the goals, I know why they did it, it might even have been their only option but I still hate it.

Oh Dear...

They let you have a station out there now they expect you to perform for them...

Dance for your story! :D

I endorse this letter too. Why so much repetition until the story goes on? And especially why setting goals that are unachievable without utilizing a controversial (and certainly boring) method....

yeah, I have to say, my enthusiasm for the "barnacle mystery" has long since all but died. I had some fun when they were first discovered, even helped do a little research, then the first CG came and I thought, yeah, after this we'll find out something cool, then we didn't find out anything cool. I think in the age when there are a hundred series on tv with rapidly unfolding exciting plots, this game's story is a little hum drum to be honest, it unfolds at the same rate as actual news on tv and is just about as exciting.

we've got 6 full length threads with nearly 50,000 posts between them. We have been dancing since April of last year, bud.

2 Meta Alloy CGs with nothing to show, a horrible method of collection, and they're begging for more? Nope.

Agreed 100%.

At least let's have MAs in the market place at obsidian orbital with a 50 limit like rares or something (bear in mind it's at least 15 jumps to get somewhere to sell them). To keep logging in and out just to farm these things is killing us, never mind them. I've dropped some off at broken stations in the last few weeks but it's a soul destroying process that breaks immersion on a level that's just silly.
