An open letter to FD re: G5 mats and CQC

Dear FD, I love you guys, make no mistake about that.

I’ll get to the point. I just spent 20 mins in a system looking for high grade emissions in the hope of finding Improvised Components. Not a single USS of any kind spawned during that time. I’m not about to rage quit though. This is not my purpose here today. No, you can’t haz my stuff.

It occurred to me during my search that this was not the most enjoyable of mechanics in the game. Perhaps instead, you could add a reward system to CQC games so that they award a sensible amount of G5 mats for the winner / winners? (and keep the existing USS mechanic for the time being, for people who don’t want the alternative)

I can guarantee that I would play the ever loving god out of that, and I suspect quite a few others would join me. At a stroke you could revive CQC, and at the same time turn one of the game’s least fun elements - the G5 quest - into one of it’s most fun but still rewarding (of skill) elements.

If you think about it, a lot of the comments about ‘grind’ and ‘RNG’ basically come down to people wanting a skill based way to progress, over something which seems time consuming and random. This is also a root cause of why people jump on quick money making ‘exploits’ whenever they come up. I saw 50,000 ships on the traffic counter of Smeaton Orbital at one point when that one peaked.

If people jump on stuff like that, just think about how they’d jump on something legal like G5 mats from CQC. My sense of why people aren’t playing CQC is because they’re frustrated they won’t get a match, and it feels like it’s not linked to the main game.

Anyway, there it is.

Dear Forum Reader - if you agree please leave a positive comment below, and add some of the logic from above to your own posts. FD are known to respond to positive and constructive feedback, and this one seems like a no brainer!

Far too sensible, it will never happen... But, yeah, nah... There'd be likely a far livelier CQC community if G5 mats were handed out to winners.

p.s. I agree.. I love CQC but it's always too sparsely populated to get a game up and running... Often sitting there for 20 minutes...

Dear OP,
I totally sympathise with you as I too find it a huge bore searching for HGE.
In the meantime, last week I went IC hunting too, and found enough in the following type of system:
USS-HGE-CIVIL UNREST-REF/IND(In fact I swapped between two of these systems every 45 mins)
Hope it helps,
Regards,
Dognosh

Thanks & repped! Would be so much better if there were an element of skill to getting them though? And, although it’s not everybody’s cup of tea, it would be nice to revive CQC for those who want it..,

I like your idea OP. I like CQC, although it is really a different game from where one attains the other 3 ranks.

It is a shame there are now rarely enough players about for a quick game on a whim.

And regarding HGEs, that gameplay really is terrible and I hope very much FD will do something to improve it even if not adding the mats to CQC.

I've tried to incorporate HGE hunting into other parts of my game but it is so inefficicent compared to Netflix plus deep space cruising :(

[up] Well said OP! I guess under these conditions, i will get in touch with the CQC-System. Moreover, it should be accessible from Starports via Telepresence. The fights themselves could happen in restricted ares (trespass zones) withhin some selected Systems!

I've never struggled to find HGE for Grade 5 materials, they are fairly easy to find IF you are looking in the correct place. I find all too often people are simply trying to find them too close to the main star.

I made this video to help.

Sure, I'd love this too. Playing CQC is fun, but waiting around for either a HGS to spawn or a match to start are not fun.

I like the idea, but I think you should have tiered rewards and get at least 1 material for just participating that way it would encourage us non combat experts to participate.

Yes. CQC should give rewards that are usable in the main game. This would be very much what pvp'ers crave. Also paintjobs and vanity bling that would make even the staunchest pve'r feel motivated to join the fray.
This is from a player that hasn't even tried it. Not because I'm opposed to it but I will always be doing main game stuff with my valuable game time.
When I was a wow-player I would always start doing pvp-arenas after levelcapping and thuroughly enjoy grinding epic reward gear which was both excellent in stats and also fed my ego by showing all the casuals what a hardcore warrior i was with the cool weapons and armor you could only earn through dedicated pvp combat ;)
I think this would satiate a lot of needs in the player base.

Thanks & repped! I love videos like this. I guess one of my points is that it would be great if - in addition to existing mechanics like USSs and mission rewards - which can feel a bit random - there were a reward for skill. Imagine if you were great at CQC and knew that if you sat down for a decent sesh at it you could get the mats you’ve been searching for ages for? I mean, what with the materials traders FD are so close to making engineering a delight rather than a chore. Once you’ve got them G5 mats, you can trade down to whatever you want...

Ok you could argue that CQC unfairly rewards combat pilots over, say, explorers. In which case, why not make a beacon at Sagittarius A* that drops a bunch, and Beagle Point that drops a bunch more. Crazy thinking?

I'll be much more happy if I'll be able to hide CQC rank from in-game rank page. I can get 3 elites with my CMDR - trading, exploring, fighting. CQC, on other hand, doesnt correlate with my CMDR in any way. When you are in CQC you should see only CQC rank in ranks page. That will make sense.

That's been discussed several times in dedicated threads and not the topic here and now.

Good point there. I’m triple elite too. My thought is that we should use the fact that CQC exists to our advantage and reward skill and experience with mats, once earned. No brainer?
