An Open Letter to Her Highness, Princess Aisling Duval

Highness,

Glory to yourself, your family, and the Empire.

I’m writing you today in the spirit of duty and as a humble servant of the Empire. Through service to the Empire, countless deeds and actions which are the truest calling of my heart, your family has seen fit to elevate my most unworthy person to the peerage of the realm.

It is humbling to find myself raised to this station through the Empire’s assessment of my actions. That a man born absent connection or station can rise to find status within the galaxy is a testament to the pillars upon which our society is built: any person can make something of themselves through talent and honest service.

Yet in my travels through the Empire, and into the uncharted space beyond, I have witnessed many individuals whose service to the Empire is little more than a means to the acquisition of possessions. Specifically, Your Highness, the procurement of Imperial starships.

Would-be peers offer token service to the Empire until such time as they can purchase an Imperial Clipper. I find I am unable to abide the shameless gall that sees those who should serve the Empire absconding to the banner of foreign powers. Imperial starships should be a symbol of ongoing service and fealty to your family. These commanders, who I hold as no peer of mine no matter their rank, bring shame to all Imperial citizens of standing. Indeed, their actions are an insult to the very principles at the core of the Empire.

I know Your Highness believes that the greater good of the Empire should not be subject to the traditions of the Empire. To that end, I would invite Your Highness to consider that title and standing within the Empire should invite greater service through feudal obligation, rather than simple material rewards. Let our titles come with the responsibility to serve. For it is this true service that separates an Imperial Citizen from the entitled man of the Federation or the apathetic man of the Alliance.

I am, as ever, your humble servant,

Lord Shaftoe

Is this what the cosmos has become?

Where a mere lord, thinks he can address an Empress in waiting?

Arry.

To the person above me, perhaps you are not well-versed in court manners, but this is the proper way to address high royalty. Especially a member of the Duval family who deserves such courtesy through the virtue of their actions, an honor Princess Aisling Duval certainly retains.

To Lord Shaftoe, I agree completely. Feel free to contact me if you are looking for ways to help Her Grace Aisling Duval's progress.

Regards,

Lord Jason Pegasi, Head of Public Relations for Aisling's Angels, Patronus of House Pegasi of Cemiess.

Woof woof!

I am an Earl; that means you curtsey when you greet me.

It is nice to see lots of toadies lining up to do her bidding.

As to the 'plastic princess'? Yes I have had a sniff and she is just another plastic princess. A product of the 'devils box in the corner'. Very high maintenance, a lot of work, make up and accessories. Pampered, preened, as a princess should be, but who will no doubt be murdered in a cold dark place somewhere, in the course of time. Murdered by the greed that surrounds her, murdered by those, jealous of her beauty, her power; vying for her position in life. My place is not to protect her, there are many with greater power and skill, giving there lives to do that, far better than I. But they are doomed to fail, as is the way with these things. It will then fall upon the likes of me, to hunt down those responsible and rip the souls from their hearts and let them beg, for the mercy of my beams.

Arry.

All that for the Imperial Clipper? That sagging old rust bucket is designed like a garbage scow. Half the quadrant knows it. Wait, what am I saying? I didn't mean to say that the Imperial Clipper should be hauling garbage. I meant to say that it should be hauled away as garbage...:D

Long live the Federation!

((hey... pssst... wrong universe... :D))

The reasons why I, personally, can't bring myself to engage much with the Empire is exactly that pompous protocol, which only wastes everybody's time. Courtesy, all well and good, but the kind of groveling that the higher-ups in feudal systems expect from their underlings serves no purpose beyond feeding the lords' and ladies' egos.

Should I ever have the opportunity to communicate with the princess, I'll treat her like a grown-up that knows how to bind her own shoe laces. That, to me, signifies a lot more respect than constantly bending over ever could! You know, she might just be young enough to not having her ego overfed, yet. And I'm certainly not going to contribute to that.

Am I in the wrong universe again? This stupid Frame Shift Drive never takes me where I'm trying to go.

And as to your princess, she's safe from me...so long as nobody puts a bounty on her head...

Would that be the Earldom granted by birthright and passed down from father to son, along with the training required to hold such a position and fulfill your duties to your vassals? Or the rank the Navy seems to give out to every glorified errandboy?

No matter, any man who believes in justice is playing their part.

Whenever someone speaks of justice, while at the same time being a proponent of inherited privilege (not just money, but actual, life- and fate-deciding privilege), this is what it looks like to me:

I'm a proponent of inherited privilege when it yields better results than the politicking and deception of federal politics, which currently seems to be the case.

For example, how many bodies has that Hudson character probably stacked up on his rise to power? First the old shadow president, now the President herself?

Nothing suspicious about that death and disappearance at all. Democracy at work.

"Democracy is the belief that the people know what they want, and that they deserve to get it hard."

This is Aisling's response: (okay it isn't, but it probably would be if she actually received that letter on her desk)

"Oh, another one? Put it on the pile with the others. I don't have time to speak to The Help." :D

She had time for the over 1 million slaves that "the help" freed in a single week, under the coordination of the Angels.

Aisling is more in touch with the common Imperial than any other leader.

Bah, stop sticking up for her just because she's pretty. :p

I'll have you know that I was part of her campaign to free over 1 million slaves as part of her bet with Torval, and how does she thank me? By sending one of her ships to shoot at me just because I happen to be politically affiliated with Winters. We're not even at war with the Empire, yet her so-called Angels think it's okay to shoot up Federation pilots who aren't even in Imperial space.

Aisling's Angels does not participate in nor does it warrant senseless violence and random acts of war. We are a defensive and peaceful organization that helps increase the influence of Aisling through trade, relief work, and philanthropy. Some supporters of Lady Aisling do engage in these violent acts, as is the case with some supporters of every other major leader. Extremists will do these sorts of things. As the official spokesperson of Aisling's Angels I can assure you that we did not sanction the pilot who attacked you and we are sorry for the experience.

I take issue with your statements Sir.
Just because we are not currently involved in direct service to the Empire do not undervalue our roles in helping to maintain it. Specifically its economy in matters of trade. Very often this involves entering Federal or Alliance space in order to import or export goods thereto. You should see the heads turn as an elegant Clipper glides into a station.
As to any service we may render to foreign powers. Is it not advisable to do so when said service would benefit the Empire in some fashion? Pirates are pirates. They are not tolerated in Imperial space. Why therefore should we allow them to run amok elsewhere? No I say. Not when our superior Imperial starships can put an end to them.

In short, do not be so quick as to pass judgement. Just because you may not witness us in direct service does not mean we are not acting for the good of the Empire.

Don't confuse Viscount Ryan with Count Ryan, we're two completely different people.
