An Open letter

One thing Eve Online does is show how dangerous an area is.... if you go out into the badlands of 0.0 lawless areas you know to keep your eye out... In 10.0 you can leave your ship in space and go and have a coffee and know it's safe due to the cops watching over you.

In Elite though it's 0.0 except in the No-Fire-Zones. I hope Powerplay sorts this out.

That's only true if you don't have anything valuable on board. People will gladly pop you if what you have is worth the lost ship. "Oh then don't carry that" That isn't the point. You said I could leave my ship in space and go afk since the cops will save me.

It's in the game title.

Elite: Dangerous :)

I don't really get these problems as I'm so far away from the core systems that it's rare that I ever bump into other players. I enjoy it when I do though!

As true as it is, I really wish people would stop using the title of the game in their arguments. For me, it takes away from any real argument you might possibly have. It's a cop out at this point.

What would make this better is if there was an actual reaction to these things. Imagine if you killed or assaulted someone and 3-4 Anaconda/Pythons dropped in on top of you requesting your surrender or death due to your violence? What if they followed you when you jumped away and interdicted you? Not only would something like that even the field, it'd make people feel just a little bit safer (people could obviously still kill you) and it would make being a sociopath that much more exciting.

The OP was attacked by a wing in an RES... probably because he was "stealing" some of their kills (which is almost impossible to avoid) or it is possible that a member of the wing accidentally clipped the OP at which point he would have appeared red to the now wanted player.
I've done it myself. I was at an RES when all of a sudden I saw a player on my screen who was showing up hostile. He started attacking me so I, of course, began to defend myself. I had him down to half shields before I realized that I had a "WANTED" tag. I broke off the attack and ran for my life.
Upon checking the Shadowplay footage later, lo and behold: I had accidentally clipped this player when he flew between myself and another target. His attack against me was an act of self defense. When I returned fire, thinking that I was acting in self defense, I was unknowingly playing the role of "senseless griefer". I'm sure the other player believed I had just randomly attacked him for giggles.

I am going to brand you a carebear and start griefing you now.

lol, I'm glad I don't play Eve online. That game sounds like the worst and I am happy Elite isn't like that. I hope it doesn't get like that anytime soon.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Keep on topic and constructive please. Thanks. Threads that aim to discuss the community will naturally garner a lot of attention, but let's not let it become a farce. If nothing constructive can be added, just move along.

I won't say what you're saying is not etirely possible, but a couple of things come to mind... first, I did say I had been hunting wanted ships alone in that RES for about an hour before anyone showed up. So in that case, they should be the ones "stealing" kills from me (which is actually quite absurd because those are nobody's ships and the RES is open to all). And second, are you saying that none of the three ships, who were veteran commanders (two Clippers and a Python) realized that they were wanted? That is hard to believe... maybe if they were three Harmless Sidewinders... but those were big, expensive and well equipped ships, so I don't think that's likely. And by the way, I was never wanted in this situation, so the possibility of them confusing me for a pirate is out of the question.

Anyway that was just an example. I'm not really that affected by that situation as some of you want to believe. I just thought including a real example would help to understand what I'm referring to. But anyway, most of the replies in this thread are really helping to state my point. Those are the best example.

Implementing the old criminal rating system from Elite might help somewhat.

For instance: Offender -> Wanted -> Fugitive. Where Fugitive was a status that couldn't be bought away, you had to run missions or trade medicines, for instance, to space stations and build your reputation back up to where you wouldn't be shot on sight by security forces as well as denied landing on any station in their territory.

This would require a redesign of the current system, so crimes are remembered even if you pay the bills. If you got over a certain level (# of credits of fines or # of murders of clean commanders, for instance), the offending commander would enter the crime system as mentioned above. This system has been detailed elsewhere by others, but would put more consequences on the table for the psychos among us who think nothing of blasting a Sidewinder with a fresh Commander in it to scrap for no reason at all.
