Having seen the flames in the threads about MT and Credit buying I remembered having thought earlier about an other way to pay for a game and wonder why nobody has ever tried it (maybe simply because big company want max profit and push for "more effective" ways). I believe it would fit very well with ED.
Here it is:
Proportional Subscription:
This is paying X €£$ / per Y hours of actual game play (instead of per calendar month). With a monthly cap significantly lower than classical MMO subscription (maybe 2/3) that should be reached only by people with something like around 4h/day of play time.
Here is the rational:
- in classical subscriptions you pay even when not playing. so people with little game time feels (and they are right) like paying too much for the use and for those playing enough is easier to justify.
- with classical subscriptions people tend to limit to one subscription dropping the others which means choosing a single game. Here someone who play enough to reach the cap has probably not enough time for an other game anyway so actually paying one subscription and moreover cheaper that other MMO. Someone who play for less and want to play an other game will more easily pay the partial subscription (which is commercially better than dropping the game) and doesn't feels like paying when not playing. Someone who play for less because he actually have little play time for him paying for how much he plays make sense.
- such a model would makes the game more attractive to new player (less thant just by once and play forever but much more than P2W) especially casual player which may be reluctant to full subscription.
- if you feel bad for the bakers... offer a little lower £/H rate until fully or partially refund ...
- can even think about new features pledge and say give money now and it will be refunded through this mecanism... great way to collect money, people will be more willing to pledge knowing they will be refund in the end... and budget for dev is garantied upfront.
- still compatible and fits very well with PURE COSMETIC MT.
- still compatible with buying extension.
- No public flaming for being a P2W game...
In the end I believe the most attractive and fair economic model that provides continuous cash flow for devs.
Maybe I'm naive but I would like to be sure this has been at least considered and thought. Maybe there will be valid reason to reject this... but please think seriously about it.
