This will be an unusual post on Elite Dangerous in that it'll be a positive one.
(GASP from the audience) "OMG, he's actually going to say something nice about the game?"
Yes, I know you'll likely be uncomfortable with the lack of moaning or complaining. However, it is what it is.
Picked up an ASP last night and spent a few minutes buying obvious upgrades before heading out. Launched off the pad and became enveloped in engine noise in my 7.1 surround sound headset. I turned up the volume to take in the incredible noise the ASP engines make. My first impression was it sounded like a V-1 buzz bomb. A deep purring rumble that sounded like a content kitten getting its belly scratched. I get outside, open up the taps and the kitten turns into a cat; a shouty cat. That soundtrack put a smile on my face which would last for the next three hours of play.
In my new found state of bliss I began to notice things I hadn't seen before. A flickering light panel from a lit ring outside a station showing where a bulb was slowly dying. Scratches by the toaster box where noobs had rubbed up against the station. I have a 2GB video card maxed on all settings and I took the time to savour the images and textures of the ED world. The detail is fantastic and the devs need a solid pat on the back for their efforts to date.
An interdiction almost took the smile away until I realized my purring ASP was no pushover. Even with the low end weapons mounted on her at the time, the furball combat was exhilarating. The "expert" Viper who wanted my cargo was not as good as he thought he was and ended up running away shieldless with 13% hull left. Not bad for a cargo hauler, I thought. I took a bit of damage, but with 94% hull left I didn't walk away from the area, I strutted.
I know ED isn't perfect and it does have issues. However, last night I really didn't care about that. I found myself fully immersed in a simulation that became just a little bit more real. All the small things the devs have done over time came together last night and gave me a wonderful experience. The sights and sounds blended together to form a magnificent backdrop.
Thank you Frontier.
Thank you devs.
Thank you for caring about making a quality product and making your world available to me.
