Anaconda Troubles

Hi everyone!

So after many, many Robigo mines trading runs, I finally was able to purchase myself an Anaconda! I went into outfitting, slapped on a few weapons, a better FSD, Shield Gen, Thrusters, and a fuel scoop. I launched and started making my way back to my home system (LTT 15574). I stopped at a nearby system where I began to fuel scoop a sun. I was suddenly interdicted by a CMDR in a Vulture. Doing the math in my head.. A CMDR with a 5,000,000 credit ship.. Versus me in a 146,000,000 credit ship.. I liked those odds! Smug, I submitted to the interdiction, and the CMDR began firing at me. I was extremely surprised to what happened.. My shields went down in a matter of 5 seconds, and my hull was taking serious damage.. My guns seemed useless against this god-like ship, and I wasn't even able to break his first shield layer.. Starting to panic, I then retracted my hardpoints, and warmed up my FSD. I was already down to 70% hull until my ship was finally able to make the jump out of the system. After that, I safely made it back to LTT 15574, but extremely confused.. How was this Vulture able to do this?

Thanks for the help!

Vulture is a very agile, hard hitting ship but extremely fragile, you are piloting a bloated whale, of course he is going to do that.

You could beat a mediocre pilot in a Vulture in your Anaconda but you will need to learn to fly your ship, especially FA off manoeuvres.

basically you got outplayed.

A combat fit Anaconda starts at around 280 million Credits and goes up to 700 million on average. The Vulture is very good against large ships, because it has Large Hardpoints and doesn't suffer from piercing penalties as much as other ships against large vessels like the Anaconda. You can't compare the outfitting cost with the actual strength of some ships if you can't handle them as well as your opponent.

Vultures are born big boy killers. Agile (thought not fast), two large weapons, relatively small and has respectable defenses.

Condas can do their thing, but they're multirole ships wheras the vulture is a superiority fighter. If you want a conda for combat you have to make sure it's well geared for the job, and get some experience piloting it.

'Cos Mr. Smug bigger is not necessarily better in Elite: Dangerous. Also Vulture excels in the role of heavy fighter in strike missions against larger, well defended targets.

The Anaconda requires a big CR investment and time in cockpit (bridge) to get used to her flight profile and how to maximize your strengths and minimize your weaknesses. The Anaconda can be a fierce killing machine, but not straight out of the box. After all, it is a trading vessel :D

basicly: Never undererstimate a Vulture. Never ever.

Even when you one day have your Conda fully equipped for combat, don't do it. Actually, don't underestimate any ship, how expensive and big a ship is does not have to mean much in combat and especially in PvP. If you for example should ever cross paths with a CMDR in a Viper named Cillit Bang then RUN! :D

You need to invest heavily in your Anaconda before it becomes the monster you percieve it to be. Yours sounds basically out of the box, which would be an easy target for an experienced player in a Vulture. This is magnified even further if you don't have SCBs and the top shield generator.

To put it into perspective: I have about 500m invested in my battle-Conda, along with a fair amount of hours flying it, and I just lost it in combat the other day in a 2v4 engagement. Yes, i was in a kitted out battle-conda against a wing largely consisting of smaller ships, but there are a lot of other factors in play. Learned a lot about SCB stacking and management for PvP that day.

Well, Anaconda is a good ship, but not very agile. Vulture is a small ship with incredible firepower and good shields. If your Anaconda is not A-fit and you're new to piloting big ships, no wonder you screwed up :p I did died to Anaconda NPC while piloting Anaconda myself, so it's just a matter of practice and time.

The vulture is one of the best fighter crafts in the game, some argue it is the best, add that to a good pilot and you are going to struggle no matter what ship you are in.

OP - You never fight an enemy ship; you always fight an enemy pilot.

The forum won't let me Rep you, so have some noted rep. That is a great way of explaining combat to other players. There is a reason that an experienced pilot in an Eagle can kill a novice in a Conda.

Because the Vulture pilot has probably been scrabbling for credits and mastering his craft while you were grinding for your perceived I-win ship.

Stories like this are the only good thing to come out of the Robigo grind.

Props to the OP for not getting salty and coming here for advice..

.. that said, it's pretty much what's been said above, a valuable lesson learned I'd say :)

My trading anaconda has 2 type 3 beams and 2 type 3 pulses on turrets then the rest of the hard points are torpedo's.

This would work but you need flight assist off to get a lock.

Sounds like you have the basic ship which is no match for an A grade Vulture.

I'm still missing my vulture. I sold it when I bought my FDL and that's been taking a long time to get used to it. I miss the manouevrability of the vulture. I've found out that zipping around everywhere really fast doesn't actually help if they can turn around and point their guns at you from a distance. I might buy another Vulture and give it a second try now that I have got used to my FDL.

OP, did you try learning the anaconda before you used it in PvP? Or did you just assume you would come out victorious because you spent a lot of credits?

Vultures are designed specifically to feed on large ships...an A rated Vulture eats Anacondas as its preferred meal. Get one and try using it sometime...they're so evil that you can hang out in a HazRes alone for a LONG time without dying, make buckets of cash, and only have to worry about running if you catch a wing of large ships that want you dead (3x Python, 3x Conda, etc).
