Analysis of most likely/needed animals - 2023 edition! (no flying birds/fully marine animals)

I've done this analysis as a follow up to several DLC releases and it's time to do it again I think. I did a twist on it after the Twilight reveal by looking at just the meta-list's higher ranked animals and why/how they'd be candidates. I'm going to go back to the original form and wow, we've come a long way this past year. We will have gotten 27 new animals and really bolstered some of the taxonomic families and regions of the world.

I'm looking at 4 packs for next year hopefully. While I'm hoping that we'll get a full pack dedicated to aviary birds, or a healthy amount of aviary birds in each pack. I'm going to leave those off for discussion. Birds that can fly but spend a good portion of their time on the ground (similar to the Red Crowned Crane) are fine to include - that'd be your storks, cranes, ibises, and the like. Also leaving off fully marine animals. Exhibit animals are fine to include as well.

This kind of falls into 5 main categories - animals with a high level of general recognizability that would appeal to not just the core players, but more casual players as well; animals that are high profile enough to stand out individually by their absence; animals from a family that have low representation in the game versus their extant species; animals in general from regions that need more representation; and animals that have signs/props/something in the game already. Please keep in mind this is not a personal wishlist, but that doesn't mean that your animals from your own wishlist can't make it in here.

Animals with a high level of general recognizability: I'm going to bring in 5 animals for this section, 3 mammals and 2 exhibit animals. While many of us on the forum would recognize hundreds of animals yet in the game, I think it's important to note that including animals that are well known and easily identified can play a role in marketing towards a more casual player. I made the comment before that even though the Tasmanian Devil is our community's most wanted animal, many people would have no idea what they're looking at and would think it was a giant rat. Doesn't preclude them from being added, but I don't feel like they're an animal a casual player would regularly recognize.

The 3 mammals that I think would fall into the category would be the Walrus, a Sloth, and a Porcupine (probably more old world than new). Since the Conservation pack I've been set that the latter 2 were the only animals that really fell into this category, but I've come to realize that the Walrus would definitely be included as well. The 2 exhibit animals are a species of a Chameleon, and a species of Cobra. I'd be bold enough to actually say that Cobra is possibly the most recognizable "current game mechanics" animal not in the game at this point. We have yet to even get another snake in a DLC, and I think if we did, it would absolutely need to be a Cobra. We even have building pieces with it, so it's omission makes even less sense.

Animals that are high profile enough to stand out individually by their absence:
I'd put all of the above in this group as well, except possibly the Walrus. I'm not sure on zoo holdings but I've never really thought of a Walrus as being a zoo type of animal. But, I'll concede it. I'm also going to put our spicy friend the Tasmanian Devil in here. While the general public may not be well versed about them, zoo/animal fans are. We've spoken and it's been reigning on the top of the list for 6 months now, and will continue to do so until A:it's included or B: we get aviary-system birds, but there ends up being an aviary-system bird that ends up being even more popular. I'd also add in the Kiwi and the Secretary Bird here.

Animals from a family that have low representation in the game versus their extant species:
We've come a ways on this one now. We now have 3 mustelids (3.5 if you do include the Skunk), 3 rodents, 4 deer, and 4 marsupials. By number count we're alright here though of course I think many of us would like to see more. What remains low in representation are the Equids and the Suideas/Suinas. We actually have no Suinas at all, but from a visual standpoint, they're fairly similar to Suideas. At any rate, we need another pig type animal. We have 2, 1 from base game and 1 from DLC after 3 years. The same situation for the Equids; we need another horse animal. I'd personally pick the Red River Hog and Persian Onager, but there's other options.

With a smaller number of extant species, these next couple are not quite as urgent, but still worthy of note. The Procyonidae family could use another representative such as the Coati, but I could understand if we ended up not getting it. We also have only 1 Viverridae, and I feel like we could use another, I'd probably pick the African Civet but other options are out there.

If we wanted to break down the bovidae with sheep, goats and cows, we could, but they're still all under same family.

This is a little different since it includes both region and family, but New World Primates. I'm not a huge primate fan so I'd be fine with just 1 more, but I know it's more critical for many players. 3-5 more New World Primates would get us to most people's minimum. Old World Primates may not be quite as critical to add, but I think another couple of them would get us to the minimum needed. Particularly, another Gibbon, which is almost a certain probability at some point. The Baboon would be another highly requested addition.

Animals in general from regions that need more representation: There's 3 main areas of the world that have a low level of representation, but it's getting better, especially with the Grassland pack adding 2 more to each Oceania and South America. In general then, the North Africa/Middle East is very low in representation and could use at least a scenery pack's worth of additional animals. Oceania and South America still need a handful of animals each to really get us to the point of decent representation - indeed with 4 primates as mentioned above, and the sloth, we'd probably be right where most would consider the minimum necessities.

Animals that have signs/props/something in the game already: This is pretty standard explanation and I think I've covered them all - the Black Rhino, the Dromedary and the aforementioned Cobra (and a Sloth poster!). I honestly don't even care if we don't get either the Rhino or Dromedary, but the decor is there. It seems odd not to have them in as yet.

So all in all, that's where I'm at with this. If we included say 4 new world primates and 2 old world primates, that's 20 animals total. Taking into account personal wishlist bias, just as an example of how that can play into it, 10 (including one general New World primate) would fall into my top 30 wants. ....I really really really wanted to add in the Wolverine and Shoebill Stork, but I don't feel like they fit any of the criteria unfortunately.

"Needed" is without a doubt habitat ground/wading birds. Even setting aside aviary birds, representation is still absurdly low--lower than canines (which I hope we're done with--sorry raccoon dog/bush dog/coyote fans) alone.

In terms of likelihood, I think the Tasmanian devil is still a lock for 2023.

I would say lagomorphs fall in the first cathegory as well and we have none.

As for pigs the collared peccary is also a must have along with the red river hog.

Ferrets and stoats would also be nice.

cape/crested porcupine - this animal must have for the game almost every zoo have porcupine. so we definitely need to get them! and they such a unique animal, so frontier I need them so BADLY!
Tree Kangaroo - more oceania A representation that is always good to get more, and the tree kangaroo is such a cute and cool animal and very requested by the community!
Tasmanian devil - such a cool animal, this animal need at some point to enter to the game they are really unique and they are in 1# place in meta wishlist so it must have animal.
two toed sloth - as I said with the porcupine, they are such a zoo animal they are so common in zoos so I think they must-have.
South American Coati - such a cute and unique animal I really love those guys and more south america representation which is really needed!
Secretary Bird - this bird can fly, but most of the time they on the ground. peoples always wants more birds because every zoo have birds. so this can be really cool to get them.
North Island Brown Kiwi - very cute and small bird, I really will love to get them!

I would say that African monkeys in particular are extremely lacking - we literally have only one species, the mandrill. I would say at least three or four more species of African monkey are required - I would probably choose the gelada and/or Hamadryas baboon, grivet, De Brazza's monkey and mantled guereza - that gives a variety of primates that could be used in most scenarios.

And, as said above, habitat birds. There are plenty of good options - I don't really understand why we still have so few in the game.

We are in dire need of new primates, mostly new world ones (squirrel monkeys, tamarins/marmosets, howlers, spiders,...) but African (any mangabey, baboon, colobus,...) and Asian (lion-tailed macaque, Hanuman's langur, Javan lutung,... to name a few) primates don't have many iconic species still represented, and if zoos tend to have something that tends to be primate variety.
Alongside the primates, I really hope we get any kind of waterfowl, be it a swan, duck or goose I'll be more than happy for that. And, last but not least, crested porcupines!

I think we can expect 4 packs next year lead by Tassie, sloth, walrus and porcupine.
That makes sense, unless we do get a full aviary pack. I mean honestly, as much as I actually do not like Armadillos, they are probably more generally recognizable- and marketable- than any of the other animals in the Grasslands pack.

I reckon you hit the nail bang on the head there. The three most recognisable and unique missing animals now are the Sloth (Two Toed preferably), Old World Porcupine and Walrus. These three could easily be the pack headliners of next year in that order (Spring for Sloth, Summer for Porcupine and Winter for Walrus). They are popular among both us geeks here and the general player base who just want animals they recognise. (I’d also say the West Indian Manatee would fall into this category, but the rules of this post do not allow it!)

I think the Autumn DLC could easily be lead by something less instantly recogniseable but still as popular and well-known as these three like the Tasmanian Devil or Wolverine. Both these animals have famous names and are recognisable to the general public, but aren’t quite as urgent as perhaps a Sloth or a Porcupine. I reckon these two also have a good chance of making it in the game at some point soon.

Other animals that have a great chance of making it in are things like Muskox, Red River Hog, Spider Monkey, Howler Monkey, Golden Lion Tamarin, Tree Kangaroo and some kind of Baboon. All of these fill a unique niche, and could be sold to a wide audience.

I think also that domestic species are instantly recognisable to a wider audience and are VERY needed in-game. Scottish Highland Cow, Kunekune Pig, Nigerian Dwarf Goat and Mediterranean Miniature Donkey are all very recognisable and distinct species that would sell a pack of domestic species to ANY audience.

Additionally, after the addition of the Blue Wildebeest in the latest announcement, I think so-called ‘clone’ animals are likely to be turning up in the next few packs too. The animals in this category that I think have a strong chance of getting in include European Bison, Spectacled Bear, Eurasian Brown Bear, Barbary Macaque, Sumatran Tiger, Asiatic Lion, Dromedary Camel and Somali Wild Donkey.

I think a LOT of animals stand a strong chance of getting in this year. But I think there are a certain few who’s absence would be a very strange and upsetting mistake. I think our most likely candidates are, as you already said, the Two Toed Sloth, Old World Porcupine and Walrus.

Copied from your first thread at the beginning of the year:
"I would define what is "most needed" as animals without any real taxonomic representation or dissimilar rigs in the game right now.

That's things like gibbons, small primates (tamarin, marmoset, tarsiers), sloths, a significant amount of ground and wading birds (plus aviary birds, but, you know), a fossa (just because they're unique), tree kangaroos, wombats, coatimundi, raccoons, quolls, the Tasmanian devil, porcupines (at least one, New World or Old World), takins and baboons. We need stuff like that more than anything, because if we get at least one of each, modders can then use those to make other species or subspecies. But right now if someone wants to make a tree kangaroo right now, they have to try and use the binturong or something, and it really just doesn't work."

So, since then we've gotten our gibbon, our wombat, our raccoon and our crane. My answer is the same in terms of focusing on animals that don't have a real taxonomic representation in the game. Small primates, baboons, tree kangaroos, coatimundis, quolls, tassie devil, porcupines, takins, wading birds, aviary birds now that we know they are possible.

This year did an ok job of addressing what I highlighted previously but I could have been better. Here's hoping for next year!

After Wetlands dropped, a similar thread started and I narrowed it down to 10 categories, with 6 individual species listed.

I guess I was clairvoyant because the top 3 choices all made it into the Conservation Pack - leopard, gibbon, and Przewalski's Wild Horse.

And surprisingly enough, @jcp011c , the remaining three individual species I listed were yours: sloth, walrus, and a porcupine.
My reasons for them have been echoed by others on here - charismatic, iconic, highly recognizable to more casual players, and also staples of our greater pop culture through media, fictional portrayals, and yes, memes.

As for the remaining four categories, it goes like this:

1. Primates - Staples of any zoo, highly charismatic, extraordinarily popular, and a bit under-represented in the current rosters. While apes and lemurs been seem to properly represented (although I'd love to see another more sexual dimorphic gibbon species and personal favorite Coquerel's sifaka added), it's the monkeys that need a big boost. If I were to narrow it down between the two hemispheres - I could see the Howler Monkey and Golden Lion Tamarin filling the spot for New World, and a baboon (or gelada) and my fave, the Colobus monkey for the Old World.

2. Australian animals - Frontier certainly took the cue from the community that this region was lacking in representation, with now three of the most requested species added in the last two DLCs alone (wombat, emu, and wallaby). With that said, I'd extend this category to the entire Oceania region and echoing that the three most likely and needed animals are the tree kangaroo, the kiwi, and of course the Tasmanian devil.

3. Turtles - I'm very surprised the lack of support for these folks around here - especially considering how popular they are in greater culture. There's so many opportunities to build upon both reptile and semi-aquatic numbers with them. And not just as exhibit animals - there's a great deal of very large turtle species that can certainly have enclosures. I'm still disappointed we didn't get one in the Wetlands DLC. While I don't have an exact species in mind, contenders include the alligator snapping turtle, fly river turtle, Amazon river turtle, giant softshell turtle, and of course sea turtles

4. Birds - Lord forgive me for being yet another poor soul wanting more birds in Planet Zoo... Flighted or not, the roster is still in desperate need of birds, and there are a plethora of terrestrial and aquatic birds to choose from - the remaining ratites, wading birds, waterfowl, galliformes, puffins, more penguins, roadrunners, burrowing owls, the list is quite literally endless. Of the most likely additions, I'll stick with uniqueness, charisma, and recognizability - so for a top 5, I'll go with a pelican, turkey, secretary bird, ibis, and FOR THE LOVE OF MALLARD, I WANT A DUCK. Eh, and I'll add five more of faves lol - burrowing owl, roadrunner, puffin, Southern ground hornbill, and spoonbill.

I also think a domestic pack with staples of petting zoos could very, very likely, such as goats, sheep, donkeys, pigs, chickens, and the long awaited Dromedary camel.

Other highly likely additions that don't quite fit my format include the red river hog, markhor (may be an unpopular take, but imo the markhor is far and away the most glaring, inexcusable omission from the ZT days) fossa, Nile crocodile, and the sea otter.

I am surprised no one has brought up geckos yet. I believe a recognizeble species such as the tokay, giant day gecko, or phantasmic leaf-tailed gecko would make a great ambassador for the gecko clade.

While turtles have been brought up I would argue that we do not have enought tortoises. Other than the two island species we already, we need a desert species such as the sulcata or a species from the rainforest such as the red-footed tortoise or the Burmese mountain tortoise.

We also have only 1 Viverridae, and I feel like we could use another, I'd probably pick the African Civet but other options are out there.
One can only wish, however other than binturongs viverrds tend to be snubbed by zoos due to their obscurity and their skittish behaviour. In fact I would argue that binturongs are one of the most snubbed zoo anmals. Therefore I would not hold my breath for another viverid.
